HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

I'm feed up with having to keep deleting things of my PS3 and auto update keep telling me I have no space so I've decided upgrade my 320gb Slim to 1tb.

I've just picked up one of these link to rip apart and use as an internal disc but don't wan't to have to re-download everything again.

So my question is whats the best way to keep all may data?

If I use the BackUp Utility to an External HDD will it backup everything from all user acounts? Games, Saves, Patches etc.

Or should I use the Data Transfer Utility and copy everything to my Fat that also has a 320gb HDD and then transfer it back to my Slim when the new HDD is in? Will this copy everything from all acounts? And does it delete everything when it transfers or would I end with my games and data on both consoles?

Also anyone know how long it will take to backup or transfer about 300gb?

Re: HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

Will that hdd even fit? Is it a 2.5" sata drive and 5400rpm i think thats right? Any bigger and a 2.5" and it wont fit in the ps3 hdd tray. Erm when i backed up my a backed all data up to an external hdd and restored when i put new hdd in. All users/ patches/ games/ gamesaves were all there. That is the way i did it and worked fine

transfer does everything

back up and restore does everything except copy protected saves

and u better make sure the actual drive is the right size before tearing it apart

There is no specifications on what the physical dimensions of the drive is internally it needs to be 10 x 7 x 0.9 cm (100mm x 70mm x 9mm).

Personally i would buy the correct internal drive rather than strip down an external drive i have just installed this Samsung drive recently for £95 it's now down to £85.

Re: HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

Thanks for the replys guys.

The drive is already in bits. It's a seagate Momentus 2.5 SATA 5400rpm drive inside and it's only 9.5mm thick. I was expecting it to be 12.5mm thick and was going to mod the caddy but surprisingly don't need to.

Copy protected saves shouldn't be a problem as I have PS+. It's mainly that I don't want to have to download all my games again. With Virgins throttling it would take me about a month.

Re: HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

not sure how the transfer would handle games etc as i wiped mine down to the basics before i did the transfer

would recommend the transfer over the back up tho as backing up 300gb might take a long long time then u need to restore as well

Re: HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

I decided to to go for the backup option in the end after reading storys on the net of the data transfer taking over 60 hours for some people. My Fat PS3 is made up of bits of dead consoles so I didn't want to leave it turned on for that long.

The new HDD fits straight in but only gives 827GB available space of 931GB. 931GB seams about right and I know some space is reserved for system software, but 104GB!??

The backup took ages. At least 18 hours to backup and about 22 hours to restore but it restored everything including copy protected saves.

Re: HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

Backup & Restore only loses the copy protected saves if you restore to a different PS3.

Re: HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

Hey DodgyDodge, a quick question for you!

When you took the drive apart, was the caddy still usable (ie did you have to break the case to get the drive out, or was it screwed together?  The reason I ask, is at that price, it is a great price for a 1TB drive and if you get a functional usb caddy, which you can then put the old internal drive in, then you truly are onto a winner! :smileyhappy:

Cheers,

Re: HDD upgrade. Data Transfer or Backup?

The case is still usable an now has the old 320GB drive inside it.
I used my finger nails to open it just enough to get a credit card in the side of the case and slide it along to release the clips.

I did the same thing ages ago with an old style 320GB WD My Passport drive which was even easyer to open. But the new ones are no good 'cos the're not Sata drives.
And I've done it with a 500GB Iomega eGo drive but the clips broke on that one so I had to glue the case back together.

I normaly find portable drives are cheaper than internal drives but not all of them are Sata.
