I was just playing Killzone online there and halfway through a game my ps3 made 3 beeps and shut itself off. I started it up and went back into Killzone and then sure enough during a game the ps3 beeped 3 times and shut itself down. I know this can't be good as it's never happened before. Anyone know what might be causing this or have had this before?

If it's a 40GB or 80GB unit, then try the fan test (search the site for it).   It cleans out al the dust than can build up inside and block vents...   Also try a hoover on the vents...

why doesnt anyone ever recommend leaving it off for a while and trying again tomorrow?

Just leave it for a while and try again after a few hours.

Because under normal circumstances, it will never get "too hot". If it is, then either the temp sensor is faulty (contact Sony), or there is a blockage internally or externally that is stopping cool air coming in and/or hot air escaping... " Try again tomorrow is not really a fix..."

I would try your suggestions if i had the same problem.
However, i don't think that phoning Sony should be the first port of call.

If i did that when my ps3 refused to work, I wouldn't still be on my first console since June 07.

mine does this sometimes too, but only when it crashes during net surfing and has to be turned off by holding the power button.
