my ps3 has started to take forever to start up eventually did then said the hdd had to b restored,so after 4 restores it then sed ur hdd is corrupted an must be formatted after it asked me if i wanted to that now i sed yes and the format began only it hung at 1% and neva moved for over 10hrs so i switched off an now wen it loads it stil takes ages but does come on any ideas how i can sort this out shud i try to format it by going to settings rather than it forcing me to format any advice wud b much appreciated.

hey GILMOURSstrat, I have a fat PS3 60gb model too and from the message you have got on your console, it sounds as though your harddrive has had it...which is never good. This would require a replacement harddrive to be fitted and if your current one is already kaput, I doubt you will be able to salvage any of the data, though I guess if you were trying to format it, your not too fussed.

I will tell you how to change the harddrive below in a minute however first things first I would recommend giving sony a call and asking them first. Right, instructions time.

You will need:
1 x new laptop harddrive 2.5 inch 5400 rpm (you can buy a 500gb for roughly £60)
a precision philips screwdriver for the blue screw
A tight fitting screwdriver for the HDD case
A USB stick or storage device that has a download of PS3 firmware on it (can be downloaded from uk.playstation.com/ps3/) or an old back-up from before the corruption

Note: You may also need a replacement HDD tray and the 4 screws the accompany it should you be unable to remove the screws on the current harddrive. If this is the case contact Sony and they will provide you with a new one (i got mine free of charge)

the procedure:
1. On the bottom of the ps3 is a panel, this can easily be removed with your thumb nail. Remove it and you should see a blue screw.
2. Unscrew the blue screw then lift the handle of the HDD tray. hold it and slide it to the right.
3. Pull the tray out.
4. There are four screws on the sides holding the HDD in the tray, remove them all and put them to one side. Note: These screws are very easy to round off so be careful. This is why I had to request a new tray and they are done in too tight with a metal that is too soft.
5. Remove the HDD from the tray and replace with the new HDD.
6. Reinsert the screws where you removed them to keep the new HDD in place.
7. Slide it back in the console and push it left.
9. put the blue screw back in and put the cover back over it.
10. Insert the USB with the latest PS3 downloaded onto it into one of the PS3's USB ports, then turn the console on. (if you have a back-up from before, you can use that instead)
11. A message will appear saying the HDD requires formatting, do you wish to format, say yes.
12. When it finishes, your good to go.

As you didn't mention the exact PS3 model, I will add that the 60GB does not need the update on a memory stick

needs to be a 2.5" SATA dont need to be 5400rpm lower revolution works just fine

my bad i thought mine was under 5400rpm but its 7200rpm
