True wired will resolve the majority of connection issues i remember my first ISP supplied router UPnP function being useless wired or wireless. With my current router i just went straight for DMZ i have always used wired since i ditched Wifi the benefits outweighed it overall.
It's also worth checking your routers firmware is up-to-date even with DMZ i had problems on few games until a recent update from Netgear. The update made a massive difference i had to mess about toggling enscapulation and DSL settings to get some games to work properly.
Also sometimes, turning off the Media Server Connection feature on the PS3 can help UPnP work on buggy routers. People always forget about that one lol.

Just read this and thought i'll place it here for others to read.
Placing any address in a demilitarized zone is, by definition, leaving it open to an attack by parties outside of your network, or beyond your firewall (if you have one).
You may be subjected to a denial of service attack if you happen to stumble across a rogue game server, but the most harmful aspect would be whilst using the inbuilt web browser viewing web sites infected with malicious code (either on purpose, or otherwise).
Advice, at the very least, that if you do use the "DMZ" option of your router in order to gain access to online gaming, rather than opening the appropriate ports as defined by the title's development team, then you should remove the "DMZ" option for the console's IP address prior to using any other online access (such as the integral web browser).

I've had a PS3 in a DMZ for over 5 years and never had a single issue with security and I don't know of a single report of any nasty stuff happening to anyone who has their PS3 in a DMZ, ever.
