Re: Hackers leave PS3 security in tatters

I have spent how many pages? trying to convince people that there is a benefit to homebrew. Didn't get anywhere.
Now I would settle for them just admitting its not the tool of the devil himself.

Still no takers to explain where the "circumvention" comes in?

Only because people wanting to (they say) Create homebrew set of a chain of events that have led us to where we are. whether they intended it or not.

Someone wanting to write there own code from scratch is good, should be championed and supported by both Sony and the community.  Doing so in a way that leads to possible harm to the general  PS3 community, directly or indirectly, is not good.

You might have a bit more success when you can provide how the PS3 hacks and "homebrew scene" has in any way benefitted the average PS3 user.

So far the only answer I see posted again and again is: Homebrew is good because ... erm ... well ... it's just good, that's why. That and people claming Sony is evil because they're trying to shut it down.

Where is all this fantastic homebrew that was supposed to be so great for the community? Where is all this well written homebrew that was going to benefit everyone? What are all these supposed homebrew messiahs doing? So far the only things that have impacted the average PS3 users are:

1 - Hacked online lobbies

2 - Security concerns

That's it.

Until somebody can start showing average users all these supposed benefits of homebrew as a result of the hacked PS3 then the argument is moot.

I have no issue with homebrew, on the PC it can come up with some fantastic things and it can be a great pool of talent. However that's not the argument because this is a PS3 forum. The fact is currently the supposed "homebrewers" have really come up with zero apart from hacking, pirating and security concerns to justify why the PS3 crack was a good thing. And until they do come up with somthing worthwhile it really is a moot point.

Homebrew can be good. The current crack of the PS3, justified by the claim that "it's for homebrew and homebrew is good", doesn't stand until such times that good homebrew is released. So where is it? That's why I'm currently totally against the PS3 crack but not necessarily against homebrew as a whole. Because PS3 homebrew hasn't produced anything of value fo the overall user base. What do we get from the PS3 homebrew scene? The geohot rap and "we are in your PSN stealing your numbers".

Currently the argument for homebrew relies on "it's good because it's good" despite there not being any good to back that up. Therefore it's an empty argument.

Its been pointed out, but your simply sticking your fingers in your ears and refusing to listen to anything else.....you think the PS3 is fine and no security has been "Circumvented"...that's cool and that's your prerogative.

Obviously those playing Killzone 3 and sitting with a huge list of pirate games on their PS3 HDD might say different, and all those who have had their GT5, BO and MW2 online games ruined might also say different....but hell who cares about them....in your eyes nothing has been "circumvented", its all been done by string and a few magic beans....and that's cool, your entitled to your opinion......but don't get all high and mighty when your opinion is not taken as fact OK.

But you know what...lets do it....OK lets go with your whole "No security has been circumvented"....So lets start with your Homebrew, as you said its not piracy...OK so im new to hombrew, how do i get it to run on my Ps3, and remember i still want to be able to access all functions of my PS3 like online and without any risk of being banned online, which should not be a problem as you say Homebrew is not piracy and their has as yet been no security circumventions on the PS3...........good stuff.

Oh i cant wait, can you also point some great homebrew apps and games, and any that have online play......i cant believe i did not try this before, Homebrew and no security circumvention and my Ps3 will be at no risk to loss of functions.........brilliant, best of both worlds.

Cant wait.

Re: Hackers leave PS3 security in tatters

Thank you all for your thoughts on this matter. I think that all that can be said has been said and that the discussion has now stagnated.

Therefore, I am now closing this discussion. For your reference below, please find the Official Statement Regarding PS3 Circumvention Devices And Pirated Software:

Important Access to the PlayStation Network and Access to Qriocity Services Notice

Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers.

These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions.

Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws.

Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 System terminated permanently.

To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

What this means to you

Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.

Many of you have asked how we intend to deal with these incidents in our thread in PS3 General Discussion and this is our initial response.

By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.

Rest assured, this message does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines detailed above, and we urge you to continue doing so without fear.
