Help me with the summer drought!

[ Edited ]

So during the summer drought in the past few years, i've caught up on some older games that I missed out on. So my catching up options for this year are:

Batman: Arkham City - completed Arkham Asylum once and it was fun for that playthrough, but I really didn't have the motivation to complete it on hard difficulty or do the challenge rooms. I love the Batman storylines, and I know that the combat was actually much more technical than it looks i.e. it was easy to get your ass handed to you, but something didn't click with me about the gameplay mechanics.

Borderlands GOTY - never played it. Looks like it has pretty cool graphical styling. Is it a squad based FPS set in a post-apocalyptic world? Anyway the second one is coming out soon, so thought this might be worth a look.

Darksiders - Already have it free from PS+ and the sequel is coming out soon. I really don't like hack 'n' slash, but the exploring looks fun, so no sure either way on this one?

Dead Space - played Dead Space 2 and was thoroughly impressed. People say the first has more atmosphere and is less shooter based. What say you people?

Grand Theft Auto IV Complete Ed - Used to have GTA4 when it first came out on 360, but to be honest didn't play it that much mainly because I wasn't so focussed on properly completing games in those days.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - I have the plat for U2, U3 and Golden Abyss, but not sure if another Uncharted game will just be overload?

Any suggestions positive or negative about any of the above would be much appreciated. Plus any suggestions for any other games you think might be worth a look. Just to give you an idea my top 10 choices for this gen so far were:

1. Heavy Rain
2. MGS 4
3. Dark Souls
4. Demon's Souls
5. Mass Effect 2
6. Fallout New Vegas
7. Fallout 3 - would have been higher but that tunnel system really annoyed me!
8. Dead Space 2
9. Deus Ex: HR
10. Assassin's Creed 2

Red Dead, Skyrim and Portal 2 were also very good.

Re: Help me with the summer drought!

Out of the choices you have there, personally iu would be playing arkham city, for the story alone its awesome.

Borderlands, there is alot of side quests and firepower to play with. and co op is fun

Gta 4, mainly because its gta and its class.

At the moment im playing through Kingdoms of amular which is awesome, you said you had 360..well its like fable if you played that.

Re: Help me with the summer drought!

Of your list I'd say Uncharted, Batman AC and Dead Space.

I thought Dead Space was superior to the sequel which I found slightly disappointing, it felt like they fixated on The Sprawl in terms of grandeur and lost the tension, claustrophobia and tightness of the first game. I didn't like chatty Isaac either. :smileytongue:

here is some of my experiences with these games.........

borderlands:

just watch out for the borderlands co-op and dont play other people that are higher level than you... or the game breaks and you will have to start all over again.. also there are a few quest breakers out there that flows around like computer virus. these quests are from a beta or something. if you get them from other players you can not complete the game. there are also some bugs with some quests and trophies.. if not done correct you will not get the trophy, so no chance for a plat... over all a fun game when you dont get the bugs and the frame rate not drop down to zero, when a lot of stuff happen... borderlands is a half arsed pc port to the ps3.... it could have been so much better.

after my experience with the first borderlands game, i dont expect borderlans2 to be any better... the ps3 only have 256mb of ram(dedicated for the games other 256 for xmb) and other limitation. if they cant get it properly done the first time on the ps3, then for sure at the end of the ps3 lifetime(ps4 coming in a year or two) they will not do it now...

deadspace:

i loved the first half of the game its just an awesome experience the atmosphere is intense.. then the game fall a part story wise... i didnt bother with deadspace2, since it moved even further away from the the first game.  but even if the story fall apart at the middle of deadspace story, its worth playing for the great  intense atmosphere at the begining. its best played in the dark late at night :smileyhappy:

uncharted darkes fortune:

if you want more of the great story uncharted2 offered, then go for uncharted darkes fortune.. uncharted3 story was not up to its greatness story wise at all..

darksiders:

this game is a mix between gow and zelda with some irritating quests to follow. this game started out very ok then moved to great. but then it fall flat down... making a game harder at the end to just drag out the game time, dont go well with me... for this reason i am not bothered with buying the darksiders2, you know your just in for more of this crap...

Remember to give KUDOS if you like :smileyhappy:

All of those games are good. Although the mobile phone constantly ringing mid mission in GTA4 made me want to hurt people in the real world.

Xorbius - Batman might actually be a good option for me, as I have played quite a few TPS recently, so some non-shooting action might do me good. That said, Kingdoms of Amalur and Dragon's Dogma are also on my to play list, so might be time for some more RPG action.

I might take a punt on Borderlands too, as it's pretty cheap at the moment. I will take your advice onboard RONNYNS and it's my own fault if it screws me over.

Dead Space also seems to be getting a lot of love too; it seems like it probably has all of the things I prefer in films - building instensity and suspense rather than all out hollywood action.

I think if I were to get GTAIV I would spend half of my time going: "Oh yeah I remember this bit" as I probably got further in the past than I remember and that would just annoy me! I'm going to wait until GTAV now.

I know Drake's Fortune is supposed to be great, but I think i've played too much Uncharted over the past year and probably need a break from it.

I might as well have a bit of a go on Darksiders seeing as I got it free with PS+.

I think Dishono(u)red is the next new game I want to get, so i've got two and a half months to work through some of these gems.

Re: Help me with the summer drought!

Incidentally, I wouldn't worry too much about Borderlands. I played that game for about 30 hours and while the comms were poor the amount of bugs and glitches I encountered in that time amount to somewhere around nil.

Perhaps good fortune was visiting with me back then.

Thanks fski. Looks like I will definitely give it a go then. Will probably be the second game I play after something else that doesn't involve shooting things in the face with guns; there's been a lot of that recently.
