Help needed - new to MLB 12

So I just started a 'Road to the show campaign' and all I am able to do in matches is pitch the ball, I cannot ever get the chance to bat, and of course I would like to do this at some point in the season. I have only played one match but I was wondering if I have set up my file incorrectly and if someone could explain how I bat on the 'road to the show' part of MLB 12. Thanks for any help!
