I like most other people would prefer a free service, however if there was a significant improvement in online play i.e. better serves, no lag etc then i'd probably thinki about paying.  Plus, once you've experienced something you'll always want it therefore you'd probably pay. Some people may say £40 isn't much but over e.g. 5 years which is the average life cycle of a console assuming that you purchase it when it was released - that is £200.
