And it was so so easy! Just use this guide. All the bits required to fix it were purchased from my local Maplin store. After being so gutted that it died after installing FW 3.00 to being so happy after fixing it!

If anyone would like to ask questions about this process I really dont mind answering.

Oh you evil man heh, but in all honesty I done exactly the same with my 40gig model, fixed it and it worked for 2 days so I fixed it again and traded it in for a slim.

Might be interesting to try this out. My first PS3 broke some time ago, but I wasn't sure about selling it on e-bay (despite broken machines selling very well). Thanks for posting the link to the guide.

its way too dodgy to buy a second hand ps3 nowadays lol. i'd advise anyone not to touch one with a barge pole.............

I'd agree with that. To clarify my own post, I mean it'd be interesting to try and fix it, using the guide, but not to sell it. Having one to experiment with might be quite educational. No hope of learning anything too advanced, but it'd be interesting to tinker with.

Fixed mine with the same method, applied the heat for longer lets see how long it lasts.  It gets used every day.
