Anyway, glad to see that 15 months after my original post, people are still finding the information useful

Doesn't matter about the legalities of the SOG act, or whether retailers are actually obliged or not, the fact is that by quoting it and pushing them, many of them will offer you a refund or replacement.  Whether its a good will gesture or not doesn't really matter.

That's a good point, but it is more satisfying to me selling my repaired ylod 60gb ps3 to a gameshop and getting £120 for it, and knowing that it's going to get ylod again in exactly 1 month lol.

Update to my mini-saga:

Got my gift vouchers yesterday, they weren't for the full amount (£300) like they promised me, I got £210. Took them down to Game and (surprise surprise) it wasn't enough for the cheapest pre-owned model. Luckily the manager was kind enough to knock £20 off one of them for me.

So now I've managed to get a newer, slimline model with an extra 40gb hard drive, an extra controller and a new 12 month warranty just over a month after my original PS3 died and it didn't cost me a bean!

Couple of lessons learned from my experience:

1: The first thing they will say to you on the phone is "sorry, we can't help you if your console is over 12 months old". DON'T be put off by this. Stand your ground and chuckle inwardly at how the person suddenly CAN help you when you mention the SoGA

2: ALWAYS get the the person's name that you're talking to

3: If they make a promise over the phone, try and get it in writing

4: Don't get your console from a place that sells second-hand products as they will almost certainly try and fob you off with one of those as a replacement (Anyone care to comment on the legality of this? Why should one shop get away with giving you a used console when another wouldn't have that option? Technically they HAVE provided a replacement, I guess it would be up to a judge to decide that!)

So once again, thanks Infaddict! You've just saved me £230 and you did it out of kindness (or a desire to see faceless companies squirm against people power)! Either way, I salute you!

PS Purplepeople - you're scum. Why make someone else's life a misery when the company you bought it off is obliged to give you a free replacement? It's people like you that make it awkward for the rest of us to get the service we are legally entitled to.

Sorry bud, I am not going to go through the effort and bug the shop employee for a free replacement for my 3 year old 60gb ps3 by quoting some SoGA crap.

it's tough luck if someone buy's my ylod repaired ps3 from a game shop, you are always taking a risk when you buy a pre-owned console.

Where's the big effort? It took me a couple of 5 minute phone calls and a bit of patience while they sorted it out. It's your attitude that annoys me, you actually sound like you derive pleasure from passing your problems onto others. Even if there was nothing morally wrong with your argument, I'd still say you were an idiot for turning down a free PS3 for the price of a couple of phone calls

Sorry buddy, I personally think people in real life are annoying and I hate speaking to them enough already, so I am not going to spend extra time talking to them and bugging them just to get a free ps3, but don't worry I purchased my slim ps3 with my benefit money from the government and also used the £120 I got for the repaired ylod ps3 towards the slim ps3 LULZZ.

Your just being silly now. Again, you are not legally entitled to anything UNLESS YOU can prove there was an inherent fault, we have already been over this numerous times and how hard it is to prove the fault was there from date of purchase.

You really need to start reading your links better.
