Re: Internet browser

Did not read the SKY GO T&C did you, silverlight 3 is required, not just flash.

Linux webkit (The power beind the Webkit browser libraries used in the PS3 ) does not have Silverlight 3.

The only silverlight plugin for linux is silverlight 2.

Microsoft controlls the NON free Silverlight 3 plugin and the have not licensed it beyond Windows, Xbox 360 or OSX yet.

Sky will continue using silverlight as they have been paid to keep SKYGO limited to Microsofts licensed players for now.

If Sky were to move to HTML5, AIR, or other system then the cost of getting a new license would be needed as well as having to recode the Xbox 360 Sky go player.

The PS3 browser has had hidden unannounced upgrades, so many that the Browser now powers Web apps from likse of LOVEFILM, NETFILX and BBC IPLAYER all running of the WEB BROWSERS updated libraries as it feeds these apps.

(Direct TV Web app is due this september in US.. to bring the NFL to US PS3 users)

I'll summarise Graphites post for you OP :

It can't be done, sky player requires a widget doo-hickey the PS3 broswer doesn't have.

Edit : You heard that right, PS3 broswer. What? Never heard of a broswer?

Or rather the apps you mention may well use new libraries, however, I believe the browser itself (NetFront 3.1) is a stand-alone app and is therefore not affected. It hasn't seen any improvements since the introduction of Flash 9.x, a couple years ago (except for possibly AJAX support (as used by Google Maps) , which has been available for some time).

Not realy, more like the current browser is on purposely blocked from the updated libraries, (expect this is due to memory problems Theres no XMB use in Iplayer or lovefilm )

Iplayer app uses the web browser libraries, disable Javascript on web browser and Iplayer dies.

Clear browser cache and you delete data from Iplayer.

Yet its 720p browser feed video.

Youtube realy has Zero excuse now. not to go 720p on PS3, So you should still be able to retire soon.

Assuming you're referring to the new iPlayer PS3 app (as opposed to the original browser based version), that's interesting and would suggest that the iPlayer is at the very least using the browser's infrastructure (settings, storage).

However, beyond this, iPlayer is most likely using an entirely different HTML / CSS rendering engine, although as I'm in the u.s., I can't see it in action.

As a matter of interest the NetFlix app is not affected by disabling JavaScript in the browser (somewhat surprisingly, you can still use JavaScript bookmarklets, in the browser, with JavaScript disabled) and I see no other evidence that it's in any way related to the PS3's browser.
