Before i send Sony another 110 quid for my 6th 60gb fatty refurb i decided to do a reflow myself to retrieve my files etc and also to see how long this temp fix will last,i sourced all the parts i needed from Maplin and cash converter,i got a second hand hot air gun for a tenner,the Thermal paste i used wasn,t the best but they didn,t have any artic silver in stock so had to settle for Nano Silver,in total i spent about 30quid as i fluxed the Bga,s before heating and did 2 passes with the heatgun at 30 minutes intervalsthis is slightly different to the GILKSKY method but im still interested to see how long she holds out for

Dont send it to sony for repair get it Reballed for 75 pound.

A reball of the BGA,s isn,t a wonder cure for YLOD it,s dependent on where the failure has occured on the mobo and also other components,the lead free solder used in manufacture is the main cause.

The YLOD cannot be cured...its a design fault in the phat...reballing...refluxing..reflowing...all temporary fixes...poor components and a faulty air flow system means the phat PS3 overheats and will always break at some point...

which is more than likely the reason why they discontinued them so quick

Why not just buy a Slim, lsd?

You're wasting money buying refurbs.

Reballing would make it last like 4-5 years, Its not a design flaw, Its a econicmal flaw, By companys forcing the use of  UNLEADED Solder.

It really isn't.

As for them stopping production of this model having anything to do with the fault, it really isn't. They stopped due to cost cutting because people were complaining the price points were too high.

5 hours straight  last night online gameplay the fan only reached the first stage and its no hotter than usual............gulp

I've reballed hundreds and nope, over 75% fail atfer a year...
