Hi,
My launch day 60Gb PS3 has got the YLOD for the second time in 8 months so instead of getting it repaired again i'm going to buy a new slim.
As the phat no longer works and i can't backup the data from the 500GB drive i put in it, Can i just take the drive out the phat and put it straight into the slim and continue were i left off?
I have a large collection of PS1/PS2 games on disc and its annoying that i will have to use my 8 year PS2 to play those (i like the idea of one box plays all). Is it possible to copy the PS1/PS2 saves from the drive to PS2 memory cards via one of those adapters?
When i log into the new PS3 can i download my purchased DLC or do i have to buy it again? i only ask this because years ago when my 1st gen 360 died (RROD) and got it replaced under warranty, i wasn't able download my purchased DLC because it was paired to the original box. It took many calls to MS CS to sort that out.
i also have have PlayTV, Eye camera and the Singstar microphones which are generally left plugged into phat so can i use a USB hub to get around the lack of USB ports on the slim and should i use a passive or powered hub?
i noticed the latest model is the CECH 3003, Are there any benefits to buying this one or should i look for one of the older models?
And finally ...
Apart loosing backwards compatibility and 2x USB ports what else will i lose when moving from the phat and also will i gain any additional features when i get the slim?
regards
joe

If i were you i would attemt a fix yourself on your fatty i would go for a reflow with heatgun on the motherboard then back up as quickly as possible before she blows again, you may get a couple of months or a couple of days before it goes again, and as for the stuff you will be losing, memory slots,ps2 backward compatability,2 usb ports, sacd playback and most importantly in my opinion killer looks.

Thanks for the replies,
So it looks like the data on the hard drive is unrecoverable unless the phat can be brought back to life, i will give the heat gun fix a try as i have nothing to loose anyway.
I should have done what i do on my pc and imac...backup, backup and backup. oh well you live and learn.
I've ordered a 7 port USB hub from ebay so i will give that a shot when it arrives.
Good to know that re-downloading my purchased DLC won't be an issue and i forgot about the memory card slots on phat because i've never used them.
I have to agree that the phat is way better looking than the slim, maybe when the warratny runs out, i'll look into transplanting the slim into the phat case.
I also read the slim can bitstream HD audio which is a nice extra ![]()
thanks again
Joe

If you want your data back, use the hairdryer fix, just ggogle it and follow the steps. when your system boots you will need to attach an external HDD and run the backup utility to back-up your data. I have the CECH 3003 and the disk tray is really clunky when you insert a disk, you have no light up buttons unlike the old slims and you have no disk of network light

Alas,no.
THE worst thing about the ps3 in my opinion - Not a huge problem,if youve only bought a handfull of content off the store.A different story,if like myself ,you have purchased over 100 titles (+addons). Not to mention the loss of all our copy-protected (sigh) saves.
Its an absolute nightmare.
As for your purchased content - Sign into your account & all your stuff will be in your download list.
Dont forget to activate your machine though - Or else your content wont work.
