My Hard Drive Dilema

So, here's the deal:
My first PS3 was a pre-owned 60GB, which I upgraded to a 250GB hard drive with no problems (I used a 60GB portable drive to perform a back up). That 60GB then suffered a hardware failure, making the system uselss. At the time I had over 170GB worth of data on that 250GB hard drive, and no portable drive big enough to make another back up copy (plus the system was impossible to use anyway). I salvaged the 250GB hard drive with all my data before sending off the 60GB console to the original seller, and buying a new 160GB slim. Now I've got my 250GB HD which the new slim insists on formatting, and a 160GB hard drive in the slim (which I can afford to wipe clean).

My questions are:

Could I use the 160 HD to back up what's on the 250? and how?

Could I use a PC to back up the 250's contents to, then just backup the (formatted + in the console) 250 using the PC?

Am I totally *****ed and is there no way to avoid losing everything?

Please use plain text.

Re: My Hard Drive Dilema

Dont take everything i say as gospel , but , no, you cannot restore via PC,restore from another unit unless via ethernet cable. I wouldnt bother tho m8, because the back up /restore facility is no longer working correctly. Im currently d/loading 320GB of games because the last restore jumbled all the data up !

Re: My Hard Drive Dilemma

I feel for you dude, but unfortunately you have lost the lot.

The only way that I know of to get all of your data from an old console to a new one is the have both of them at the same time and to connect them together with an Ethernet cable.

Stupid question: can you get your old console back at all, if you could then you could pop the old hard drive in and transfer the data to your new console, otherwise its all gone I'm afraid.

Obviously you can still download all of your content from the store, but all of your game saves are gone (unless you have plus and back it up).

Re: My Hard Drive Dilemma

i find it strange that there aren't one hacker out there that have made a backup appz. that let you back up your old stuff to your new 160gb hd and trick the ps3 to accept the 160gb... but i guess you must go on the dark side to find out this information. sony should never have forced a hd format, they should have linked the hd to your psn account.
Remember to give KUDOS if you like :smileyhappy:

Re: My Hard Drive Dilema

Can you not put your old drive into a usb hard drive case and plug it into the ps3..

I bought one of these for my old 60gb drive when I upgraded the hard drive and it works a treat..

Re: My Hard Drive Dilema

Unfortunately, as I understand things, the PS3 encrypts its hard drive with a random number that is generated on purchase / format and stored deep inside the system. So a drive from one system will never be readable in another one as the random numbers are very, very unlikely to be the same.

It may also be the case that if you have a working drive (call it A), remove it and format/install a different drive B, then replace it back with drive A, drive A will no longer be readable as the random number will have changed when B was formatted/installed.

All of this is to stop piracy and hacking. Hope useful.

I was always led to believe that drive A will still be accessible by the PS3 without formatting.

Re: My Hard Drive Dilema

Yes it is you are correct. however the external drive can only be fat 32, not other file format can be read by the ps3. The internal ps3 HDD File system afaik is called the cfs so cannot be read by the ps3 via the external usb interface. Simples.
