My fat PS3 HDD to a Slim PS3

Hi,

First I want to say is, yes I know there are many posts of this, but I could not get a good answer... My problem is a bit more complicated in my opinion.

So, my old fat PS3 (a 40 GB version) got the YLOD (Friday) :Frown: , I thought of some solutions, and it seemed that buying a PS3 slim was the easiest option.

So I bought a PS3 slim, tested it with the normal HDD, wanted to put my 'old' HDD in it, but then I got that error that my firmware isn't correct... (I don't got that standard 40 GB HDD, I got a 160 HDD from Samsung)

so I went to a friend today who also has a fat PS3 but it gave the same error? He had an other 40 GB version I guess... I wanted to copy my savedata to my USB... He had like an other 'basket' where you put your HDD in.

Ok, this is what I want you to tell me because I don't understand everything very well..

What's the best way to recover my PS3 Savedata? It doesn't matter if it's my old HDD or my new (PS3 slim one) and if I can recover EVERYTHING (downloadable stuff) it would be even better! :

- Going to a friend with a 60GB version and put it in there, and copy it to an USB?

- Plug my old HDD in my PC? (via usb port) (which I'm failing at cause my PC doesn't 'find' it...)

- other way?

Thanks,

TheJsp

The only way to recover any data from the HDD isby managing to get your YLOD ps3 working again.

You can not get the data from it by plugging the HDD to a computer (your pc can't recognise any of the data on it)

If you put the HDD into another PS3 it will automatically format the HDD, thus wipping any data off it.

Re: My fat PS3 HDD to a Slim PS3

Your best bet is to try and get the 40GB working again - some people have had luck with a hot hairdryer in the back while the PS3 is off. Attempting to put the HDD in the new PS3 just risks reformatting it, there is no way you can get the data back this way.

If you try the hairdryer method, before you turn the PS3 on, be ready with a flash drive that has sufficient spare space. Go straight to the game saves menu, press triangle and copy each one. Curse Sony that you can't do them all at once!

The reason the HDD won't work in another PS3 or a PC is that it is encrypted, and only your old PS3 contains the key that can decrypt it. Sony have done this to prevent piracy, to prevent people from accessing firmware or game code on the disk.

Re: My fat PS3 HDD to a Slim PS3

Your ONLY option is to bring your old YLOD PS3 back to life long enough to get the data off it. *

There is NO other way at all.
Your PC will NOT be able to read it.
Putting it into a different PS3 (of any model) WILL force you to format it.
Putting it into a USB caddy and attaching it as an external drive to another PS3 will NOT read it.

* For more details and info, check out my YLOD thread, which is linked in my sig line below :smileyhappy:

* YLOD? * *PSN Connection Problems?* *Blu Ray Problems

And we weren't even testing for that..
