Need advice...not all that clued up on internet connections

Howdy people

Need little advice, I'm currently on sky BB 20MB and im considering switching to Virgin Media.

I've done a connection test and sky have tested the line, thing im confused on is i pay for 20mb a month and before i took it out they estimated the connection at 4mb a month which i didnt mind but the download speed and upload speed is only 0.8mb (768kb) am I right in thinking this is utter slow and awful connection?

Is there anything i can do to make it faster?

If I do switch from Sky to Virgin is the PS3 easy to switch across on the settings?

hope someone can give me a little advice.

cheers

0.8 is not even 1mb ,, change your provider if their not going to do anything about it what your getting is only a step up from dial up.

I'm in Ireland as you may have guessd and I'm on a upto 24mb package and normally get around 18mb wired and 12mb wireless if I was getting what your getting I would change straight away.

Ask them to check your line for faults and tell them that you are paying for a Broadband connection and that is what you expect and not a enhanced dial up connection.

If you're gaming, I understand Sky are terrible in relation to other ISP's.

Changing the settings on your PS3 is VERY easy chap, don't worry about that. All you need is you're wireless key that comes with your new ISP's router etc.

1) Engineer install's internet

2) Switch on PS3 and search for connection

3) Enter wireless key that came with new router (usually on back of router and on a card)

4) Done.

I'm on BT Infinity (Fibre Optic). I suspect Virgin offers the same speeds (maybe better?). Unfortunately Virgin's not in my area as the council refuse to allow them to dig up roads etc:

If Virgin is in your area, I would try them. I've known people on their 50MB broadband getting speeds of up to 60MB, and you generally seem to get what you pay for.

Re: Need advice...not all that clued up on internet connections

We were on Virgin for a while, got told we would get speeds close to 20mb, but we never got more than 7mb. That was the same as we were getting from our other isp for a lot cheaper, so we switched back. It's not like we live miles from the exchange either. Virgin's customer service were rubbish too. I would steer clear. That is only my experience though

Everyone? I haven't experienced this... Even if they are capping you 30 seconds to load this page is a hell of a lot.

If you were to switch, to anyone, made sure you know what you should be getting, and be sure to question them if you are not.

Re: Need advice...not all that clued up on internet connections

i just had a look at VM's traffic management policy as i'm with them and i have the 10mb connection. it clearly states for the speeds up to the XL package (ie the 20/30mb connection), that between 10am and 3pm if you download/upload X amount you will get your connection will be reduced by 75% for 5 hours. between 4pm and 9pm you will also get your connection reduced by 75%. i don't know where you got that time from, as it's not on their traffic management page.
