Not using rear audio channels on 5.1 audio

I hooked my PS3 up to a brand new AV Receiver with 5.1 surround yesterday and only discovered today that the rear left and rear right speakers aren't being used at all. I know the speakers work through the AV Receiver because they play the test tone perfectly. However, 5.1 video and games don't ever use them. The input info on the AV Receiver also reveals only channels 3, 2, and 0.1 are being used.

PS3 is connected to AV Receiver via HDMI to Port 1 and this is then connected to the TV. I have the Audio output settings to automatic and have tried various audio settings in the Video Settings.

Is there some setting I'm missing on the PS3, or is there anything else I can try to get this working?

When you say 'video' do you mean Blu Ray, or videos downloaded from the store ?

I didn't notice any rear channel use in LoTR: Return of the King on DVD or in a test .wmv file that was encoded at 5.1. It went through the whole 'Front Left' 'Front Right' and all that, but when it did the 'Rear Left' and 'Rear Right' they were played via the front speakers, and could be 'visualised' as between centre and front left, and centre and front right.

Re: Not using rear audio channels on 5.1 audio

Is BD / DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) in the sound settings menu section (XMB) set to Bitstream or Linear PCM ?

Re: Not using rear audio channels on 5.1 audio

I tried it with both settings and there was no change. Mostly had it on BitStream though.

Re: Not using rear audio channels on 5.1 audio

Have you unticked all the 2 channel options in the audio output settings on the PS3 leaving just the Dolby and DTS 5.1?

Re: Not using rear audio channels on 5.1 audio

I thought that would make sense to do, but some options don't allow me to uncheck them. These were the Linear PCM 2.1 lowest frequency ones.

Re: Not using rear audio channels on 5.1 audio

This may just be a silly suggestion as you say the test tone worked and it's a different AVR to mine, but I had the same issue when I first connected the PS3 to my AVR. However, have you actually checked that the rear speakers are actually set to output sound on your AVR? My AVR was set to 0 as a default and I felt a bit of a tool when I finally realised that's all I needed to do!
