Other OS removed in next update?

Why should $ony remove that option coz 1% if the PS3 owners found a hack? GROW UP $ONY!!! The PS3 still cant play backups and I guess it never will. The Wii and xbox360 can already play backups and their sales haven't dropped so why are you so worried about a handful of PS3 owners? I say keep the OtherOS feature and IF they do find a way to play backups you will just get more sales so wont it be a good thing? I know a heap of people that don't own a PS3 and are waiting for backups to be played on it then they will all buy one. Think of all those sales you will get. I keep telling people the PS3 is the best console out of the 3 but its still too high priced and it cant play backups so its not the most sort out console. If $ony want to make the PS3 the number one console then I say leave the hackers do their thing and let a hole get through so it can play backups and you will see a huge sales increase. Dont forget the OtherOS is for the old phat consoles so anyone buying a new console cant even use that feature so its not really a threat is it? Why punish all of us for 1 persons hacking attempt? I very highly doubt all of us will be hacking our PS3's. I know I wont be. I do use Linux on it, so its a very useful feature to keep. There will be huge complaints if you remove it and a lot of people will NOT be updating their consoles so you will be loosing a lot of money from PSN. I know I wont be updating if that happens so I wont be buying anything from PSN if it comes down to loosing features. If $ony want to sell more consoles they are doing it all wrong.

Re: Other OS removed in next update?

I like how you keep referring to playing pirated copies of games as "playing backups".  Mate, call it what it is - Piracy.

As for your wild rant about removal of the Other OS feature, I'm with everyone else wanting an official source about the claim that it will happen.  I've read nothing about it to date.

Re: Other OS removed in next update?

1, thats how this forums does it. I had it all in paragraphs but the forums stuffs it up so blame $ony for having crappy forums.
2, how about READ other sites. I've read this on about 10 sites so far so its very common.
3, Backups and pirated copies are 2 different things. 1, a backup is when you own the original and a pirated version is when you dont. I have a few backups I use as I dont want to damage the originals. There is nothing illegal about playing backups. Here in Aus you are allowed to use backups.

I've just read about 10 sites reporting about this and they all show the same statement from someone at Linux.........who says its a RUMOR, and quote "I don't know if its true or not"

A few sites I read it on says its from a good source. Still, it'll be a stupid move from $ony if they do remove it.

It would be a stupid move from Sony if they didn't remove it.......do you think they want people to hack the PS3 and pass pirated games around whilst losing millions in game sales :Stupid:

Less than 1% of PS3 owners have actually installed Linux, of the remaining 99%, some of them don't want to install Linux, others don't even know you can install it, and the rest own a Slim , so they can't install it..........

Actually the forum does it fine... I suspect you had the body text set to HTML rather than Rich Text, so when you wrote your paragraphs it came out as one big block of text because you weren't using HTML code for your paragraphing etc...

On topic... don't care.. :smileywink: ... this isn't what I bought my PS3 for. I bought it to play games.... And it's not because I'm a linux nub or anything. While I'm no expert, I've dabbled a bit including most recently building a web server.... I just have no interest in this feature on a console. Just like I have no interest in PlayTV.

Re: Other OS removed in next update?

I own the PlayTV, and the PS3EYE and a few other things thats why I want to keep my 60GB as I use all 4 USB ports and I also use the OtherOS feature. It can do more than just Linux and its been doing it from week 2 after its release. Anyone heard of PS3SAK? That came out week 2 after the console was launched so this new hack to the OtherOS is nothing new really. If they wanted to block the OtherOS feature then they took their time but they will pi$$ off a lot of people if they do remove it.

Look at a sales point of view. The PS3 is a better console than the Xbox360 but why is the 360 selling so many more units? 1, it can play backups, 2 its cheaper.
Thats what I see all the time. I work with a console repair shop and we sell all consoles modded and unmodded and the 360 is the best seller following the Wii and the PS3 is the last to sell. They are usually trade in sales. Someone comes in with a YLOD unit and we trade them a slim instead of fixing the unit but for actual sales the slim is virtually 0. I've never seen one get sold yet only trade ins.

And no, I'm not talking piracy. If you want to do that then its your problem, but the Wii and 360 can run backups you made yourself from your originals. The 360 also has a reputation of scratching disks thats why I use backups. And the Wii runs backups from USB so yea for the Wii :smileyhappy:

Re: Other OS removed in next update?

Hmmm, back-up copies... Riiiiiiiiiight...

There's no need for your so called 'back-ups' if you bothered to care for your discs properly. Oh, but then again, you didn't actually buy the game, did you?
