Re: Other OS removed in next update?

All geohot did was to get so far with his attempt at cracking the PS3.

But by posting how far he got and what direction he followed, gave a big hint to a retired hacker who had no interest until Sony removed the 2nd OS, of what possible holes can be exploited.

Here's some [very heavily edited of technical content] of what the now "Reactivated" hacker has posted.

QUOTE;

Since Sony has killed the Other OS feature, they have reignited my interest in hacking again.

What drives me is to bring back the Other OS feature and to make the system open for homebrew, at best.

I'm on my 3rd PS3 (lost two due to the YLOD) and now I should buy another one such that I can play my favourite games online again.

How crazy is that?

QUOTE:

I'm pi**ed that Sony has removed the Other OS feature for no reasons.

After studying geohot's hack, I can tell that the hack can easily be fixed.

The hack became possible because Sony didn't obeyed the strict rules of the
PowerPC specification.

QUOTE:

Instead of fixing the problem, Sony wiped a whole community all of a sudden!
And this is something I can't tolerate.

If my engagement, whatever, would ever lead to any piracy on the PS3, I tell you, I don't f***in care.

Either Sony brings back the Other OS or they can all burn in hell.

QUOTE:

Anyway, I hope the lawsuit will bring us back the Other OS feature. Believe!
I'm just interested in homebrew and stuff.

I don't have any interest in piracy what so ever.

The Other OS was a key factor in buying a PS3, for me.

From the brief technical description I read of how he intends going abot this, and depending on how much time he expends on it [ A heap now that he can't use Linux on his PS3 to finish his various projects] , I'd guessitmate Sony had around 2 months, probably less before he's cracked it.

If he releases the crack out into the wild is another matter, he's not really the malicious type, somehow I think he might toy with it like a cat with a mouse, with maybe posting some things he can do with his cracked PS3 on Youtube to amaze people.

Most likely showing a PS3 with the latest system software then starting up Linux proving he cracked it as a starter.

Re: Other OS removed in next update?

there's reason yeah GTR but that doesn't make it the most sound decision. The issue is that Sony went too far, not that they should've done nothing people do care about security but the masses of linux users wanted Sony to close the exploit, not remove functionality. As I said before, a measured response would've been better both for us consumers and security alike.

How bout you spare me your lack of perspective if your going to be grouchy and just leave us alone which obviously feel stronger about it than you.

I have rights to be grouchy, just as you have rights to whine. It's a world where you'll never have everyone seeing eye to eye, and you're going to have to deal with that. I would like to feel sympathetic, but to the extent some have dragged this, I have lost all reason to feel so.

Think about this....
When did the PS3 hacking really start? When the slim came out with no OtherOS.
When did the PS3 hacking scene get blown out of proportion? When OtherOS was removed.
What is the main thing for the PS3 hacking? To bring back OtherOS.
Can the PS3 play backups? NO
Will the PS3 play backups? If $ony bring back OtherOS then no. If the hackers have to force it back then yes.
Can $ony bring back OtherOS and fix the so called security hole? YES but they don't want to.

PS3 - It only DID everything, now it does A LOT LESS THAT IT DID.

Being such a beacon of knowledge and opinion, I think you need to invest in a new keyboard... The SHIFT key and 4 seem to be sticking a lot.... :smileyindifferent:
