Re: PEGI is enforced for video games

Being a Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita owner, at first I was gonna' say "Yeah, that's happened to me as well", but then, Halo 3? That's naughty, only PlayStation games here hehehe! JK, yeah, I know. I'm 13 but I've been reading books and learning to do stuff that no-one my age knows how to do. I've even started learning how to use the PS Vita Dev Suit, no-one of my age even knows what that is!

Re: PEGI is enforced for video games

This isn't even going to vwork as parents will just buy the games for their children anyway as they have done before and how they will do in the future

Parents paying for the game and parents being forced to go into a shop is a different matter.   Now that the liability is on the parent it changes alot.  This is more targeted at those kids who are of a more impressionable age and are able to purchase for themselves.  Not your spoiled little princes and princesses.

I fully support this legislation. Being given more tools as a parent makes life a lot easier.  As a gamer I foresee developers aiming for the middle market games and the 18+ titles will either fade out of existence or become ultra violent adult exclusives. (which leads in only one direction...)

PEGI is a decent system and not only has an age rating but also a content advisory

I doubt that 18 rated titles will fade out of existance. If that was the case then there wouldn't be many 18 rated films either.

To be honest i dont think this will change much at all, i didnt even realise it has been legal to sell 18 rated games to under 18s, and i work in a supermarket. As far as i know it is has been very difficult for an under 18 to get a 18 rated game from a shop, without the help of their parents even before this law change.

Swops, lending, buying from mates/private ad/ebay  and downloading however, different story i assume.

Re: PEGI is enforced for video games

Developers and publishers already have a hard time selling their games and have already adopted a cut and paste approach to gaming. Publishers push for sequels and their core year on year breadwinners.

PEGI is currently showing 255 18 rated UK titles but with the change to enforcement in the UK your consumer base just took a hit. Basic market principles means you either risk it or adapt. Developers will downshift and make small but critical adjustments to help drop age ratings to a 16.

The movie industry take a very similar approach. If you look at the BBFC website you can see the statistics shift overtime. There are a surprisingly low amount of 18 rated films with 12A And 15 clearly being the targeted audience.

Re: PEGI is enforced for video games

Personally I think it is a brilliant idea and they should inforce a law about buying for underage people aswell. Prime example that manhunt game that when that lad and his mate were acting out a scene from the game and ended up killing his best mate. Children's brains arnt developed enough to know right from wrong.
Sorry if my spelling/grammar is poor. I struggle to put my thoughts onto paper I'm a way that makes sense sometimes.

[ Edited ]

BBFC are not going any were. They will still be sent Games, IF the UK regulator wants to...

True Its a way to force developers to cut content.

Yes it will be for those that contain a lot of FMV and Cut scenes but BBFC is Still an option for the UK regulator If they Wish.

It will be fun to see IF and when a game goes this route or if they just hold it over a publisher.

Re: PEGI is enforced for video games

Like many others i don't believe this law or ruling will make the slightest bit of difference, if kids want a adult game, they Will find ways to get it, but maybe, just maybe this 'change', if given proper press may actually make moms+dads think more, i mean theres a lot of parents who i have seen in gameshops actually just buying 18 rated games for their kids, the last one i noticed was a ordinary looking, avarage mum buying her 7or8 year old, oh the game with 50cent in, (can't remember name), now i very much doubt this woman is 'bad', just like many others 'unaware' of what it's all about, i mean i can imagine the content and language of that/other particular game, but to a ordinary parent it's 'just a game', Anyway If the pegi leads to better education of non-gaming parents, then it will be a good thing, apart from this i kinda agree with an above post, it's going to lead to less mature content for the rest of us, which is a bad downside.

ps. not to argue, but those people and manhunt game, i believe thats evil at fault, not the game that was used as a excuse/defense.

Re: PEGI is enforced for video games

Will this actually change anything? Or is it just a bit of extra paperwork?

Just stops games neeeding to Edited so offen as PEGI DOES NOT rate games 18 as offen as BBFC would. so increases the number of 16 rated games and increases the number of legal sales to the 15+ market.

15 - 21 year olds allready need a proof of age card in shops and to ride the buses as a child/student in UK, So all ready have to have POA ID.

Proof of age for 12 -15 is new and those should be sending off for POA cards very soon..
