i lul @ people who say it isn't optional when another update that is optional will require you to update both so your gonna be eventualy screwed, so enjoy your linux while you can brah, lol.

I just had a quick read through the System Software License Agreement here and I found this:  

SYSTEM SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT

3.  Services and Updates

"Services may include the provision of the latest update or download of new release that may include security patches, and new or revised settings and features which may prevent access to pirated games, or use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with the PS3TM system. Some services may change your current settings, cause a loss of data or content, or cause some loss of functionality."

OtherOS is a software feature, not hardware. As it says "You do not have any ownership rights or interests in the System Software. All intellectual property rights therein belong to SCE and its licensor"

Sony can do whatever they want with the OS and we can't do anything about it.

EULA's don't supersede actual law - especially not one presented to you after you start using your product. The PS3 is a system that was sold with certain capabilities - removing these is against EU (and probably US) law no matter if it's hardware or software.

Too bad removing otheros doesn't actually do anything whatsoever to close any security holes. Look, this wasn't randomly placed on the box. And removing it does nothing to stop anyone from hacking the ps3. It only looks that way to morons - and jerks with inflated egos who post on their blog a lot.

I would have thought that advertised features that may have influenced a persons decision to buy especially one that is used and could cause substantial loss of use from the product is not covered by that - that should be consumer rights.

Pretty much. I'm not really interested in spearheading this on Sony's behalf, though. Since if it succeeds, it only rewards Sony with more sales from people who otherwise would just not buy Sony ever again.

But if we can grill them, and just make Sony look bad - I'm all for it just for the sake of revenge.

Look at it this way: by announcing this "feature" of 3.21 Sony already lost a huge batch of credibility --- since they said they will *not* remove the OtherOS feature on the non-slims in future upgrades.  And the way it looks in most forums (english, german,...), many users seem almost decided to part with Sony if they really do such a stupid thing.  Isn't that revenge enough, being sued till the ****** bleeds and losing customers --- ie., the money that they intend o keep by issuing 3.21? ;-)

erm... i guess as I "upgraded" to a slim i'm one of the many that won't be affected but still ain't happy with Sony's move.
I just hate the way they get away with stuff. To be honest it's not completely their fault, "security risks" have come about. On the other hand, there must be a better way or fixing it other than removing a feature. Surely they are just being totally lazy, and getting away with it by saying its optional.
Feels like one of those far a field comaprisons here but.... if I told someone to make a choice out of being stabbed or being shot.. they say shot and the I shoot them. (I would never do such a thing... it's a crazy comparison) But would I get away with it cause they said they would like to be shot?

I understand being killed does not share many similarities with losing a feature on a PS3... surely Sony are breaking the rules though ?
