@Kazper-DK: my post was referring to the article that the update will have an impact on people using it as supercomputers... which it really doesn't since those people are using it for work/research and not gaming 
But I can see your point if you're low on cash (like a student) but would like to program and play games... personally I'd prefer to invest in a cheap PC and install my own version Linux rather than using a PS3 as it has more feautures and in the long run more efficient, but yeah that's just me.

Or, if you're programming on the spus outside of work. You know, the kind of thing Sony really, really want us to do, so the Cell will be easier to ease into the industry later.

Seriously, where does this come from.. I mean, someone please tell me - where does this belief that companies are all-powerful entities that know exactly what they're doing at all times. Companies, if we believe rants like the above one, have a consciousness and state of being so supreme it defies comprehension, logic or limitation of earthly disposition. The companies have total control, and are insidious, and they are clever.
Why does this turn up? Are people that stupid?
Do you think Sony are incapable of doing irrational decisions based on pure and complete idiocy, no more clever than the people who work there? Now that's a irrational and illogical presumption if I ever saw one, to believe that Sony is incapable of mistakes. It also defies observable fact. Again and again, basically. Pick any amount of decisions Sony has made over the years, and it's impossible to describe this as conscious and logical, based on fact, or even any kind of consequence of thought.
So where does this idea come from? What's next - that Sony cares for you and wants to have your children..? And the marketing department would really like to give things away as well, no doubt - but unfortunately can't because they are poor..? Hm?

Sony specifically stated that is PS3s that are used in this way they DO NOT HAVE TO BE UPDATED.
