I am backing up the ps3 to an external hdd so I can change it tomorrow but he only problem I have is I don't know if I can reinstall the system software on my ps3 using the external without deleting everything.
One more thing it says that there are something that it cant back up this way does any one know what those things are? Will it tell me after its done? Cause I don't want to change the drive and then find that all my saves are missing.

if you just upgrade hdd on current console then copy protected saves will be restored (i think that everything should be restored as before since it's not console change). when you try to restore to a different console then copy protected saves will not be restored (and probably some more things). but since system software supports data transfer from one console to another then copy protected saves will be transferred also. i think there were some limitations with data transfer utility too but can't recall them now (i think something with singstar stuff and something similar).
