PS3/PSN download speeds

[ Edited ]
Hi guys
For some reason my PS3 fat had started downloading things really slowly, agonizingly slow actually. I have a PS3 fat 60gb (although I have recently upgraded the hard drive, but I had the problem before and after), I am connected over a wireless connection to a BT hub 3 and I have port forwarding on for the PS3. My internet connection is a BT infinity line, rated at around 30-35Mbps download on speedtest ( translates to about 3Mbs+ in steam). Up until recently my PS3 had been downloading pretty close to the estimate that the console gave me in the connection test, and things downloaded pretty fast. But all of a sudden it had started downloading really slowly, at the rate of about 1Mb every 10 seconds. The change just seems so sudden, I haven't done anything differently, except it seemed to start after I came back from a holiday and hadn't used it for 2 weeks. My connection is the same, speeds the same, PS3 hasn't moved. Everything is the same as before, when I had fast downloads, but things have just slowed to a crawl now, took about half an hour to download a 60mb patch.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what may have caused this, or suggest something I could do to improve this? (no I can't do a wired connection)
Thanks

Re: PS3/PSN download speeds

BT undersubscribed pipes may be faster but third party Pipes remain as random in speed as ever.

If the Patch was to move a game to new servers and the Game is now running on different servers it would make sense for the publisher to reduce the old servers bandwidth and pay for the new server access instead.

No it's not just the patch that downloaded slowly, it's everything. GT academy took best part of a day and batman arkham city demo has downloaded 160mb in the last 2 hours. It's really frustrating this

Then its BTs third party ISPs Pipe to Sonys PSN Store IP for your area being over loaded.

Won't take 2 hours for me to download 160MB. Even with a traffic shaped VM connection with its new routing errors of the New packet data inspection system they have added...

Edit = just pasted 225MB as typed.

Re: PS3/PSN download speeds

Had the problem myself before small downloads taking ages. I believe the cause was a failed game install corrupting the OS.

Cured the problem by running the safe mode operation twice option 3 restore file system and option 4 rebuild database. http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Technical-Help/Using-the-Safe-Mode-function-on-...

After the second run i had a 4.5GB corrupted file i could delete and everything was back to normal.

Re: PS3/PSN download speeds

Hmmm that could be a cause mont348, although it is a new hard drive I did a back up and restore of the old hard drive which had some corrupt data on it, something went wrong when I was trying to uninstall something, but would this get carried over in the back up? I'm guessing it would. Also it seemed to occur at around the same time. I will try your suggestion and see if that improves things, thanks

Re: PS3/PSN download speeds

It's worth a try the two operations will either remove any corrupted data or give you the option to delete any rogue files afterwards.

Well it would seem that trying that had no effect unfortunately. If anything things seem to be going even slwoer this morning, I timed the download, and it took 20 secs to download 1Mb! The connection test is now showing a connection speed of a couple of hundred kbps, a drastic difference to what I usually get. Even during peak times when the connection was good it has never been this bad. This is starting to get on my nerves now

Just timed how long 1mb took again, and it took over 1 minute!!

I really hope it isnt something to do with the console itself, as I really dont have the money at the moment.

Re: PS3/PSN download speeds

I also have BTHH 3, with infinty. I have 2 wireless PS3's. Both work fine when both are connected. But my PS3, which is a slim, is at least 2 floors away from the router. While my Dad's PS3 which is FAT is about 15 feet away from the router.

Yet the Slim gets the best connection & download speeds. I can easily download 1GB in about 15 minutes. Keep in mind, I'm 2 floors from the router, were my the fat PS3 is only a few feet away with no walls in the way.

Even when I'm not online, his download speeds are slow. I've always just blamed it on that maybe the wifi chip in the fat PS3 was worse than the slim.

I tried everything to, port forwarding,DMZ. The only that that worked was a Ethernet cable, but it's just not convenient to run a cable around the house.

Re: PS3/PSN download speeds

Well unless the wireless chip has decided to conk out in the 2 weeks where i didnt use it, I doubt that that is the cause (at least I hope it isn't) When I was at my uni house a few months back me and my housemate had PS3s, but he had a slim and his always downloaded faster than mine, not by much though, we were both downloading at pretty reasonable speeds.

Now I have found some corrupt data, 4 infact, and have deleted 3 but get stuck on downloading the 4th. Im just letting it sit at the moment and see if it's just taking its sweet time about it. For some reason after restoring the file system it took the corrupt data from where it was in the game data utility section, and placed where I couldn't see it with the way I had things organised. I'm using folder view at the moment, and there was no corrupt data visble in any of the folders. But as soon as I got rid of the folders, the corrupt data appeared.

Also decided I might by a cheap small HDD slim, and put in the new 500gb drive I have just bought for my fat. Or maybe buy a preowned one. Does anyone know if it is advisable to buy a preowned one? And does anyone know what kind of trade in prices GAME or HMV (if they take consoles) are offering for a 80gb fat?
