I just used the recovery mode on my PS3 slim as it was going a little slow.

Option 3....

On 44% it came up with an error saying the HDD was corrupt and had to be formatted.

I've just lost everything i didn't have on the cloud!!

One reason to back up regularly.

My external HDD, connected to my pc, was on its way out but I managed to save all my photos and videos taken on iPhone but lost all of my music. Now in the process of putting my tunes back onto the new one I just bought, should be done it a week or two.

It's really annoying when it happens.

yeah, same thing hapened to me a couple of days ago.

It has happened at least 5 times now since owning a PS3.

Regular Backups are of Critical Importance with any device containing a Hard Disk Drive. In fact, I'm backing mine up tomorrow!

Turning the system off correctly can also help via turn off system by users on the XMB or the front I/O button.

Thanks for that information...For the past 5 years i've not known how to shut down my PS3,I thought you had to yank out the power lead to turn it off.

actually lol'd at this. i had this yesterday my ps3 paused on the browser so i turned it off usng the button. when i turned it back on i had to do a system check luckly for me it got to %49 and just went to the xmb
