PS3 Slim 320gb actual memory capacity

Hi all,

Just got my new slim 320gb, after my fat 80gb got ylod on me. Was very excited about having all the extra room for downloads and play tv recordings. But after set-up i was quite disappointed to see the actual amount of memory available was only 263gb. I expected some drop off, but right after set-up, the system information says 263 / 298gb . So i can understand a drop from 320gb to the 298gb. But where the hell has my other 35gb gone? How is 35gb taken up without anything actually being saved on the system? This is quite a drastic amount lower than the advertised 320gb, and it's very annoying.

Can anyone clear up why this is so? And have other people had the same problem, and are they annoyed by it?

Thanks guys

Hi that's about right i had approximately the same when i upgraded my 40GB to a 320GB drive the Ps3 reserves about 10% of HDD space for its operating system.

I've got one of the new 320gb consoles and mine is exactly the same.

It's quite annoying like you say but I think it must be the way it is.

Re: PS3 Slim 320gb actual memory capacity

PS3 reserves some space for game HDD caching.  It's reserved as a percentage, so the bigger the HDD, the bigger the cache.

There is also a fixed overheard of space for the main OS.

Re: PS3 Slim 320gb actual memory capacity

1024mb = 1gb, so a 320gb drive is never that for starters. It was just easier to 'round' up to make it easier for the consumer. Then of course the PS3 takes a small chunk for caching.

Your Ps3 is reporting the right size, and you still have all that extra room you were excited over.

Re: PS3 Slim 320gb actual memory capacity

Hey

Actually PS3 320 GB's Original Memory Is 298 GB But If It Is Showing 263/298 GB It Means Is Some Technical. You Know That 1 KB Is Having 1024 Byte But PS3 Count Space According To 1000 Byte So After Couting The Whole Space Acc. To 1000 Byte It Becomes 263 GB And That 24 Byte Which left in Each KB After Counting Become Of Approx.35GB And These 35Gb Uses In  The Software And Junk Functions Added In PS3.

So 263GB Is Usable Memory And 35GB Is PS3 Function And Features Used Memory.

263+35=298GB
