Re: PS3 Slim fan noise discussion.

I don't think there's any way to fix the problem - seems to be poor quality fan parts or something. I had the same problem with blurays, which is why I ended up biting the bullet, taking a hit in the pocket and trading in the slim to buy an 80gb (which I'm much happier with).

If you are getting a PS3 slim from GAME, ask if you can test it first. Then make sure the room is quiet - if they do it out the back where the air con fans are on, you won't be able to hear the whine so be aware of that.

Re: PS3 Slim fan noise discussion.

Or just buy it from the GAME website and send it back within 7 days.

Re: PS3 Slim fan noise discussion.

17/4/2010 Phil

MANCHESTER/UK

I have just purchased (26/feb2010) a sony ps3  250g slim and cant believe the noise!

First 5 minutes, its good

After 10 minutes, louder, but ok.

After 20/25 minutes later its an intolerable whine.

You have to turn up the sound on the TV to blast over it!

I contacted sony on ( 0844-736-0595 ) and they said it is not a fault,  telling me it was something I was doing wrong as the noise was normal. (the only move that would reduce the noise on this hair dryer would be to turn it off)

If the Air conditioning at sony hq sounded like this,  they'd move to another building till it was fixed.

I cant believe sony have let this design fault through production,  and worse still,  blatantly deny it's a problem when so many other uk ps3 owners dont EVER suffer  this noise level.

I am very disappointed to see that sony no longer have pride in their standards   of design, consistency of manufacture, and worst of all, honour towards its loyal customers.

You have failed our expectations of Sony. R.I.P

And still your  response will be, " YES...BUT! "

I'm fed up with your sony but in my face!

Youtube the problem before spending your cash. It's a lottery and I lost...£280. It could be you ;-)

Re: PS3 Slim fan noise discussion.

Is the Gig better?

I wouldn't use it for anything other than gaming anyway.

Re: PS3 Slim fan noise discussion.

Spot on Pike9r. Alhough if you don't want to waste all of the cash, sell it/trade it in. That's what I did.

Worst thing is, I started with a 60gb PS3 which died through YLOD. Then I got a refurb 60gb on the continuous play insurance. Knowing that that was only covered for 6 months, I traded it in for a noisy slim and then lost £100 selling that and buying an 80gb (which is better than the Slim but doesn't play PS2 games like my refurbed 60 gb did).

I guess someone should kick up a stink with Watchdog or something. Sony have got away with murder with the YLOD problem and now this.

Very poor.

Stick with Microsoft when the next gen of consoles comes out. Sony don't give a ***** about customers.

Re: PS3 Slim fan noise discussion.

Yes, 80gb is better than noisy slim. It still makes a noise, but nowhere near as bad as a Slim. I can watch a dvd or bluray on my 80gb with the sound on a normal level and the noise of the 80gb doesn't affect my viewing. I couldn't bear more than 5 mins of a film on the slim.

Re: PS3 Slim fan noise discussion.

[ Edited ]

Well my PS3 Slim 120GB has the same sound as everyone... I think that before 3.00 update it was quieter, so I tried to find out what's going on, I found on a webpage that the PS3 Slim fan model it's a DC Brushless brand

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/PlayStation-3-Slim/1121/2

Searching the net I found that a PC user bought a DC Brushless Fan and it has the same high pitching sound... check the following thread..

http://www.picaxeforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=9077

It seems that the DC Brushless Fan brand makes that high pitching tone at high speeds.

I hope that this helps to understand that there's no faulty fans, it's just the way they're built... and I would like to know if Sony made a wrong of good choice using this fans.

Cheers

Yep. Sounds just about right.

It's a lottery indeed and it was me. I bought £ 285.00 worth of noise.
