I find it hard to believe anyone would spend a couple hundred pound just for a slimmer model when there's absolutely nothing wrong with the slim we have now, just like i think its crazy they are selling while and red PS3 slim consoles for £250+ just because its a different colour

I agree.
every time a new PS3 comes out the design gets worse.

The slimmer console cheaper to make their for cheaper to sell.
You can already get a PS3 160GB for about £160 make it cheaper more people will buy, it is not about selling the console to people who already own one it is about selling to people who are still on the fence with the price.

I suppose that makes sense, why cant they just lower the price of the slim we have now?

Because the current slim is still pricey to build, and they can't drop the price much more, least with this newer slimmer model they can drop the price much lower and build up the userbase.
Still can't under stand why they still have both usb ports at the front, if it is a redesign i would of put at least one port at the back.
Also with this model you can get to the laser to clean it easier.
