Honestly, unless your online ID is something offensive, who cares what it is.
If you're worried about people teasing your online ID - then you probably shouldn't be online. Its competitive, that is the nature of it. They WILL find a way to tease your name haha.

They say it would cause problems with trophies and such if it was possible to change your PSN ID.

If it's so impossible to do, why can you change your Xbox Live gamertag without any problems? They have all the same kinda things liked to the accounts: email address, passwords, friends lists, DLC, online purchases, saved games and achievements etc. It's not free but it can be done.

the account structure at microsoft must be different to sony, all account activity is linked to your psn name, so its to hard to change. is it really that hard to believe?

imo changing names would cause alot of identity problems too, people can grief then switch names, could get very confusing
