I have plenty of real friends thank you very much. Surely sitting there is being unsociable, going out with your mates would be far better.
As for X game chat, if I'm playing one game in single player I want to be playing that game and not chatting to other people. If I'm playing a multiplayer game I want to be communcating with the people ACTUALLY PLAYING the same game as me, and on the same team as me. Not a mate playing an entirely different game.

Its only our opinion mate (i own a 360)....
Just because some people dont see the point of it .......Doesnt mean a lot people dont get a lot of use out of it.
A lot of my friends use it all the while .......Its justt that i dont ........I also think some features on the ps3 and Wii are next to usless as well ........Only opinions.
I'm sure SONY will get round to it someday .........In the next 3 years.

The BONUS would be game chat, so in games such as S&D, we don't get the enemy hearing what we're saying and other game modes so we can have our own private conversation.
Now, CROSS game chat is nothing but useless. It's a party system that's needed and with that party system, we should be able to use microphones.
My friends and I have made great use of the text chat, but it would be a lot, lot more convenient with voice chat.
Sorry for off-topicness but TBH, but cross game chat is more or less useless.

How about online games that have poor voice or no voice build in? I've been playing Borderlands Co Op and the voice is really really bad, we now revert to using Skype.
This is where Cross Game Chat would really be usefull.

That's not actually CROSS GAME chat though is it?
Here's my take on this.
PS3 = Gaming/media/fun.
Sociable/having a laugh with friends = Pub/mates house.
Telephones was designed for chatting on.
Consoles was designed to play games on.
The last thing i want while trying to beat Radec on elite is being put off by you talking to me at the same time... 
Wait until i've finished before starting a convo up about the hippocrocapig you pulled the night before.
Put the money to good use and develop new and interesting IP's not some stupid feature just because 'that other console has it'.
