Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

Hey all. Just trying to solve a few problems with the sound on my PS3.

Well I have just bought a new 55'' HD LCD TV. I have my PS3 connected via HDMI to the TV, I have my Samsung Home Theater (only about 18 months old) connected to the TV via Componant cables. And i get surround sound while watching TV. So to the problem

I have sound thru the TV speakers just fine, but not to the surround sound. so I went and bought a Optical (TOSLINK) Cable as my Home Theater has an optical in, thinking that would fix the problem but NOPE it didnt. So after a couple hours of research and changing settings on the PS3 and Home Theater (EXAMPLE: changing from Linea PCM to bitmapping etc). More research. Went and bought the standard RCA Cables and I get surround sound just fine. I have Piggybacked the A/V out on the TV with the PS3 RCA's. but go back to watch TV and the sound is dull, even just to hear it i have to turn the volume all the was up and still its too quiet. But if i unplug the RCA's sound is fine. So what I need is some solutions as to why I cant use Optical cable from PS3 to Home Theater, Why the standard RCA's would dull the TV volume while plugged in.

My TV inputs are as follows:

HDMI #1= PS3.

HDMI #2= PVR (which also doesnt have surround sound)

COMPONANT #1= Samsung Home Theater

COMPONANT #2= Nothing Connected.

AV #1= Nintendo Wii (Gets surround sound)

DIGITAL COAX

Home Theater Inputs:

RED/WHITE/YELLOW RCA's

COMPONANT (Blue/Green/Red)

OPTICAL.

I know the optical input on my Home Theater works as i can use optical to the PVR and get surround sound. Trying to figure this out as i really dont want to have to spend $80-$100 for a Digital Coax/Optical/Analogue Converter.

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

I know it sounds stupid but have you changed the sound output under settings to Optical?

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

Tried that to no avail. even reset all options and tried again. Its confusing me way too much. will try again later. just seems that maybe the optical in to my HT wont accept it

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

The way mine is set up is that my optical cable goes from my PS3 into the back of my Samsung Surround sound and then I set the sound output to "Optical" whatever. Then I make sure that my surround sound is set to work through optical and viola! It works!

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

Thats how i want it, but as I said before for some reason when the Samsung HT set to DIG-IN (digital In) I still get no sound, It could also be the settings on the PS3, there is so much advice out there it gets confusing. So i go to SOUND SETTINGS - change to OPTICAL - select formats, by the way what settings did you pick. i have two (2) LINEA PCM options i cant turn off then there is DOLBY 5.1 etc. My HT is a Samsung HT-C330.

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

Im at work at the mo and can't remember exactly so i'll have a look later. Is there a setting to say DIG-OUT on your SS as the sound output is out not in?

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

If i I hit the SOURCE button on the HT I get AUX - D-IN(this is the optical input coz it works for my PVR) etc, but dunno if there is an option to change from out to in. But if you could check that would be great.

[ Edited ]

Mat try this on your HT put it to AUX - D-IN then connect the optical lead to your PS3. Then go to sound setting and choose optical and make sure the default setting are selected like Dolby 5,1 untick DTS 5.1 and let me know if that works.

because if your receiver does not support DTS 5.1 some games will give no sound instead of using Dolby 5.1 automatically.

hope that makes sense.

get one of these and you can have 3 optical devices going though your HT works for me.

3 Way Optical Switch

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

Tried your option SickMick. but still nothing. I just checked the optical cable and port on the HT by pluging in my PVR and had sound so the cable and port are good. I only selected DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 and the ones you cant deselect ( LINEAR PCM 2 CH 44.1khz/LINEAR PCM 2 CH 48khz).

Re: Playstation 3 Surround Sound Issues

not sure then I only had the Issue where I had DTS selected when I shouldn't have.
