This is the cable: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/belkin-f3y005cp-hdmi-
I've just realised that the DVI end of the cable is single link but my monitor DVI slot is dual link, could that be the cause?

That resoultion is not supported buy PS3.
The PS3 will not support Monitor resolutions. Only ever supports HDTV resolutions over HDMI. Component or DVI.
If the monitor can't Supply its own hardware scaler then It will never work with the PS3.
This is why You needed to Post monitor make as you have. being a HP, I very much dout HP released a monitor with out Hardware Scaler built in.
Right now the techy users that have read your post on this form will be going over the manual for your Monitor which they got off the HP web site.
Yes getting the manual is that easy for HP products... Ive done it before for this lap top I'm typing on.
URL for manual...should be this....

Just confirm its the correct model number again on rare occassions there have been redirects ..
Don't have time tonight but will check it tomorrow.

Make sure your monitor supports DVI-I or DVI-D, if your monitor is DVI-A only then i don't think it will work.
Edit: also must support HDCP i believe.

I know it's not the same but I had a similar issue with component. Not sure if this'll be any help, probably not:

The problem he Has is that his monitor has no SD connections being a monitor it was not needed.
Unlike you he can't see the PS3 screen to even set up SD feeds, Now that he reset the video out settings all HDMI out put has likely been disabled. Which means the PS3 Is stuck on SDTV connection.
Component conection is turned on by the default presets on PS3 as its a SDTV resolution option.
HDMI is off. buy default.
HDMI will remain of untill auto triggered buy the correct HDMI connection, this requires a digital hand shake from the PS3 and HDTV to set the resolution but the HP monitor is stuck in 1600x900 mode and his monitor wont allow Manual controll of the resolution.
From the monitor manual I can't find the resolution over ride button or Monitor Hardware scaler controll.
But from the manual It seams to be only enabled on HDMI models which he does not have or via VGA connection.
The only thing I can currently think of is the OP needs a HDMI connected HDTV which will allow him to "TURN OFF 1080p" when connected via HDMI and set the up HDMI on PS3 manualy for "720p MAX" only.
Then reconnects to monitor, hopefully that will wake the DVI-D connection on the monitor up and it will re-enable the hardware scaler.
This seams a bit useless to surgest as if he had a HDMI TV the OP would not be using this monitor in the first place.

I actually do have a HDTV but it's downstairs. It' too big for my bedrrom plus, it's not mine. But if I get a normal HDMI lead and connect it up, do as you said then it should work?
