Re: Regular vs Inverted

inverted ALL the way......i've had to bin a few games over the years that dont have the option to invert controlls, i simply cant play using the regular way, i end up either walking into walls and looking up at the sky or down at the ground........

Basically what the title of the thread says.

I have this personal view that the so called Inverted controls are the way it should be and that the so called Regular controls are in fact inverted.

My explanation for this is always to tilt your head back which would represent down on the controller, therefore making you look upwards. Tilting your head forwards, represented by up on the controller would in fact make you look down.

Makes sense right? So what I would like to know is... which control method do you use and why?

Regular vs Inverted, you decide!

I always use inverted.  The analogy of the tilting your head theory makes perfect sense to me, i've never thought of it like that before :smileyhappy:

Re: Regular vs Inverted

The "up is up and down is down" regular method of thinking is fine, if you assume that the right stick is not "forwards and backwards".

Take the tilting head example. If I was to grab the back of your head and push forwards, you would look down. If I was to pull it, you would look up.

Hence, when I push R3 forwards, I expect that my view looks down, and vice versa.

Re: Regular vs Inverted

Inverted for me,
If i jump on a standard i get lost in the recoil on shooters, try and counter and end up shooting the birds

Similar to op I've always said it was movement of head; for example when shooting your eyes should be straight with the weapon and move head with the weapon

Your logic is slightly flawed though. Down on the controller represents directing your eyes down, not tilting your head back, thus down on the controller means looking down. E.g you're playing Cod and you push down on the right stick, you're directing your eyes down towards the ground.

This is actually a really interesting comparision because it brings out the way people interpret how the input on the pad links to the output in the game.

With this in mind I don't see it as just the eyes looking down, I see it as the entire body in movement. If you point the gun towards the sky for example, the gun is pulled backwards as well as the line of sight so it can be pointed in said direction.

Like you say though it is very interesting on how people view the input. I feel that the inverted style is more natural as it reflects everyday circumstances. If you tried looking directly down without moving your head forward it would be difficult. Same applies with looking upwards unless you tilt your head back.

Re: Regular vs Inverted

Inverted every time.
In fact I'll refuse to buy a game if it doesn't have the feature to invert the controls.
I always fail to understand how so many people say "normal for everything else, inverted for flying". It's the same thing, you're controlling an object on a screen. So you pull towards you to go up in a plane, you do the same thing to look up as a character. You push away to go down in a plane ... you do the same as a character. Never got the whole "these controls make sense for flying but not for anything else" view.

But then again each to their own, if that's their prefence fair do's. I just relate everything to "I'm controlling an object", whether that be an aircraft or a character. Therefore the objects should react the same. I don't sit on my sofa with a telly remote in one hand and a cup of coffee in another and go "I want to put these on the living room table ... with the remote I'll move my arm away from me and down, with the cup I'll move my arm towards me and up, that should achieve the same result".

Now anybody who uses normal for an aircraft ... that's just bizarre :smileytongue:
