Serious twist to backing up my Playstation! HELP!

Ok, I know it's actually very easy to backup a Playstation 3, I've managed it on more than one occasion, but here's a little twist for you. I have a 500gb hdd that I installed in my 80gb PS3, this is literally full now with all the usual stuff as well as about 100 HD movies and here is where the problem lies. Many of the movies I have are well over the usual 4gb size that is compatible with the external hdd backup procedure. I used a LAN connection via my router to download the movies that were previously stored on my laptop, but I've had a couple of issues with my Playstation lately and what I really want to do is transfer these movies to my MacBook in preparation to buy a new Playstation. The external hdd backup procedure will work for my data, trophies etc, and some of the smaller movie files, but how do I get the rest???
I'm hoping somebody out there has the answer!
Thanks in advance for any help

Re: Serious twist to backing up my Playstation! HELP!

Doing a full backup of the whole system might be the only way to keep these 4gb+ files.
Use the backup utility in the system folder and chose full backup, obviously you'd need a large external HD formatted to fat32 to do this.

There in lies the problem, Fat 32 only supports files up to 4gb files and most of the movies exceed this by almost double. Thanks for your efforts though.

not if you do a full system backup. it seems to compress into a cabinet format. it doesn't actually copy the individual file over.

I know fat32 only supports upto 4gb. I have done the full backup with 4gb+ files on the system myself with my old 320gb , i know it works.
Be prepared to be without the ps3 for a while though. When i did it to my 320, it took almost 18 hours to back up and another 18 to put it back.

Full system back up will do with out any issue. but it will take ages (4 or 5 hours at least).

There is a but though. and that is you will not ba able to view the film on any other computer. May be you should buy your new PS3 and then link it to your new one and transfer yor data straight to your new one.
