Yeah, well we all know that. Hell, there has never been a M$ product that was actually M$'s idea. They do certain things very well, often taking someone else's concept and developing it. But when it comes to games and game consoles they have got a loooong way to go. Unfortunately for them, its a field where you need to be able to come up with original ideas that actually work. No wonder M$ is flailing around copying all of these ideas that are on the PS3 already....

Riiiiight. But first I guess they should sue Activision for publishing the Vigilante 8 series on N64? But, oh no, hang on - Vigilante 8 also appeared on PS1, and never on a Microsoft console. Oh never mind, that's alright then...

Re: Sony Should Sue Microsoft

Going off the article yes Dave Jaffe has a point, Microsoft have always ripped off Sony Franchises since they got into the console gaming business. Its really quite disturbing how much they want Sony's success. Although other companies always copy each others ideas, Microsoft do it so blatantly. So yes Sony should sue MS over the Scrap metal game.

As for the film about greek gods, i think Sony should stop them using the name war of the gods, its a little to similar for my liking. And if the film proved popular and a game arose from it, that could be very difficult indeed for Sony.

Seriously, we like games. Personally I think we should avoid scrapping over something as simple as game names. It'd only add fire to the console war, and no one needs that.

I know your trying to calm everyone down and stop a flame war but seriously. If Microsoft had their way Musterbuster  you  wouldnt even have a job working for Sony. It seems to escape some peoples minds that MS want Sony crushed/finished. that is why they have unleashed tons of viral campaigns against Sony, that is why they copy everything that is popular on Playstation. That is why theyve bought up exclusivity deals on every Sony big hitter.

This is why people get upset over something that initially seems trivial, its because we all know what Microsoft are really trying to do!

Re: Sony Should Sue Microsoft

I dont really have an opinion on this to be honest.

Ripping off games is one thing like Dantes Inferno and GOW, but they are sufficiently different to stand as their own games.

Scrap Metal / Twisted metal is clearly a rip off, and could easily goto court.    Its a deliberatly supposed to sound like the sony game, this is marketting to trick eople to buy it thinking ooh ive heard ofthat it got great reviews on the PS3...

If Microsoft had called Forza say .... GranD TurrismoS.... they would have been sued..  They dont rate Twisted Metal as IP thats worth defending.

God of war to movie War of hte Gods.....   Does sound similar to me but it would be down to the court to say wether they thought the similariities in the movie were enought to be a clear infringement of IP..

Interesting opinions..

Remember tho that microsoft got windows by stealing the idea from apple, then copyrighting it before apple could lol.. (OK theres a lot more to the story but it was theft, and billy gates took advantage of their trust and naievety.)

Re: Sony Should Sue Microsoft

Sigh....

Competition is s good thing. Without Microsoft we would all probably be paying £600 for PS3's and £70 for the games...Sony are just as much about beating their competition as Microsoft are, like every publicly trading corporation. Sony have just as aggressive a track record across their whole business as Microsoft.

Don't forget for you older gamers that it was the hubris of Sega that allowed Sony to royally shaft them and see off one of the most loved consoles manufacturers from the 80's and 90's.  It is the hubris of Sony on the back of it's position with the PS2 that has allowed MS to outmaneuver Sony and gain an equal foothold this generation.

Gaming history is full of companies copying each others ideas, nothing new to see, move along.

Think of poor old Netscape. Microsoft copied one of the first and better web browsers by making there own version (internet explorer) and made it free with every version of windows.

Now that web browser is out of buisness thanks to microsoft, microsoft are allways at it. They try to dominate every field possiable.

No disrepect to you my friend, but it's more than a little narrow minded to think Microsoft are alone in this approach. It's business, plain and simple, and if you look hard enough you'll find examples of this type of behaviour from the big players in any industry (e.g. watch a few ads from the popular car manufacturers and you don't have to concentrate too hard to read between the lines with some of them). Some companies are more openly derogatory and direct as they strive to get one over on their competitors, but all will be out to get each other. Sony might be more subtle in their approach, but make no mistake, they'd just as gladly see the demise of Microsoft in the gaming sector as the opposite. The key point for us as consumers is that it's not good to get sucked in by the spin of Microsoft or Sony; not good at all. If either were to disappear from the gaming industry, we (as the consumer) would likely see a distinct downturn in the quality of games, accompanied by an unwelcome hike in prices. So don't let this kind of thing worry you. 99.9% of us don't have the kind of influence to spark an uprising in either direction, or change things directly, so let MS and Sony's marketing teams slug it out between themselves as they always have, and always will.

And on the original subject of 'copying' ideas - again, accept this as an inevitable side effect in any industry sector. Everyone is influenced by everyone else, and if one group has a really ingenious, really popular idea, then others will jump on it, adapt/improve it, re-brand it and launch as the next best thing. It's not worth getting upset over. :smileywink:
