Re: Sony on PS4: 'We've never been first. We've never been cheapest. It's about being the best'

I'm sure they have the same memory (512mb although, I think 256mb of the ps3 memory is video memory).

However, the amount of memory isn't necessarily the issue, it's how each machine uses it's available memory.

We'll see if they rush it or not; hopefully this time they'll put a decent browser on it!

Be patient Sony isnt going to rush out the PS4 and give us a Playstation 3.5

It wouldnt surprise me if they where busy by starting with the specs making them high as possible and then working on the additional projects to make the PS4 do everything.

Rather have a beast of a console than a poor end low performance machine with bad limitations anyday. Yes it will cost a bit but considering you will be way ahead of the other consoles and the games will be ten times better and last longer with gameplay its all good. Lets all not forget how good the online service could be if they gave us 5 times more playable demos, dlc, games, movies over the competitions

Long live the Playstation 4.

Rumours/leaks are starting to happen now and discussion is heating up on the specs, I don't see it launching any later than Q1-2014.

As a mixture of rumour/prediction, this seems like the approximate spec atm:

APU: AMD 2013 'Steamroller' Quad-Core @ 3.2GHz CPU (+ AMD 76XX GPU??)
Discrete GPU: AMD Custom Chip @ 800MHz/1.84TFlops/1152SP (7970 Architecture/Features with 7850 Config'/Performance)
RAM: 2GB-or-4GB Unified Pool Of GDDR5
HDD: 2.5" SATA HDD for Storage & 16GB Flash for OS/Firmware/Cache/Save-States
OPT: BD(4-6x)/DVD(8x)/CD(24x)
I/O: 1xHDMI 1.4, 1x AV, 1x Toslink, 1x AC, 2-4x USB 3.0
Release: Q4-2013/Q1-2014

Remember, closed box devices such as consoles offer roughly a 1.5x - 2.0x performance increase over their PC counterparts due to custom implementations, optimisations for specific hardware, higher budgets for console games, extensive r&d for that specific hardware and the lack of heavy OS tasks running in the background.

If this is the case (remember these things are subject to a lot of change), it's unfortunate if the cell won't be returning, backwards compattibility likely won't exist (emulating SPEs on a CPU like this would be hellish) and years of libraries, tools, money and hard work surrounding the cell will be thrown away. But this machine would be a beast with roughly an 8x-12x 'powah!' increase vs ps3 over it's lifespan. And multi-platform development should be much easier as long as MS & Sony get their RAM pools roughly the same.

With these specs they can probably break-even on a price of £349 by the time it launches..

I personally think that the specs will never be set in stone until it gets here, devs will have a rough idea of what they'll have to work with, but tech moves so fast. We'll see. I can't wait for next gen games though, it feels like the time is right.

OPINION

If you remember back to E3 in 2005 when the PS3 had all the specs and then look at the PS3 now, it is very different. So even when Sony does announce the specs, it would still be a confirmed myth until we have it in our living rooms judging for ourselves.

Re: Sony on PS4: 'We've never been first. We've never been cheapest. It's about being the best'

microsoft seem more interested in kinect, the new nintendo one seems to be just catching up with the other two graphics wise, and noones got any money to spend. Also, apart from maybe betheseda games (more down to memory usage than graphics) i haven't seen any games that would have benefited from a new console.

agree with the failure rate comment 100%, the ps3 should have been given more physical memory or at least a way of upgrading it, hopefully the ps4 will be more geared towards reliability.

only thing holding back the ps3 is the memory... its 512mb splitt between the xmb and the games, a total of 256mb on each. so if sony is planing to have the ps3 going for 2-3 more years expect more frame rate slowdowns, texture popping,  longer load times etc etc.. its a shame that sony thought flashcard readers was more important than memory.... i hope sony learn next time with the ps4.

What they really need to do is bundle it with PlayStation Plus to try and hook their consumer base right from the get go.

The "being the best" thing is exactly what I would say to anyone considering where the Orbis is in production compared to the Durango. So I'm taking it with a pinch of salt, but I would like there to be a clear divide between the consoles.

bundle it with plus??.. why??... so it get like xbox where you have to pay to play anygame online, that makes no sense whats so ever. one of the best things with ps3 is that you can play the games free online. xbox live is a scam... period.
