Sony update = flashing red light.

Hi

PS3 80gb (fat)

Hadn't had the slightest problem with my unit since purchase.

Hadn't turned the unit on for 3 or so days.

Turned on and within 5 minutes was downloading the 3.66 update.

Went out the room for 3 minutes, and when I came back the unit was turned off and the red light was flashing.

The conclusion being that the Sony update has destroyed my PS3.

I have phoned the helpline guy (pleasant and helpful) to be told that becuase my unit is unfortunately out of warranty the only thing he will do is offer to replace my unit with a refurbished one of the same spec.

For £134.

I declined. Obviously.

In my estimation, because the unit was destroyed by a Sony update I should be offered a new unit (new or refurbished) or a free repair at the least.

Is this being unreasonable?

I didn't say any of this to the phone guy but I'm thinking about ringing up to follow up my case (I have the reference) so to get this point across.

All the phone guy said was that it sounds like a specific malfunction with an internal part but which over the phone was unidentifiable, then gave me some guff telling me not to believe what users are saying on the internet about the flashing red light / yellow light of death issue.

He did however help me get my copy of Assassins Creed: Brotherhood out of the drive.

Not that it's going to be much use in the foreseeable future..

I'd like your comments please.

Re: Sony update = flashing red light.

It is just a coincidence that it died during the update.

More like it was just the time to go.

My 80GB PHAT is fine and so are my 2 slims.

If it was the update it would have killed all the PHATS out their!

Sony are stabbing their loyal family customers in the back - We have 3 PS3s and 3 PSPs all on the same IP address and all registered with Sony. Why can't we use them at the same time anymore?

Re: Sony update = flashing red light.

CrustyJockStrap pretty much summed it up. I have a old 80gig PS3 and it downloaded and installed the 3.66 update without a problem. So it's not the update which caused your Ps3 to malfunction.

Saying that, I can see where you're coming from. I'd be wondering the same if it was my 80gig instead of yours. I would give them a call back if I was you and explain when it "died". Other than that, there's not much you can do I'm afraid.
