The Official PS3 HDD MOD Thread

[ Edited ]

So i thought ide write this up again as some people might be interested in doing this mod.

Basically you can put a 3.5" desktop pc hdd on your ps3, i have done this and put a 750gig hdd on my ps3.

What you will need is: a 3.5" hdd of your choice (i have got the Seagate 750gig), a sata cable, and an external 3.5" hdd enclosure.

I also highly recommend getting this as it makes doing this mod very easy, cost is $25US but very worth the money. Then all u do is put the hdd Xtender in the ps3, put the 3.5" hdd in the enclosure, hook up the sata cable and power cable and your set.

A few points to keep in mind:
You will need to power the external hdd with its own power source, you could power it straight from the ps3, but the hdd will draw too much power as it is larger, resulting in your ps3 constantly freezing.

You CAN NOT put the 3.5" hdd IN the ps3 - if i had a dollar every time someone asked me this...lol

You will need to have your ps3 sitting flat as the cable comes out from the left side - you could go as far as making feet for your ps3, say 5cm high, for the cable or you could drill a hole and feed the cable through, up to you...mine is always sitting flat

Pros and Cons:
You will need to turn on the hdd enclosure power before you turn on the ps3, and turn it off once you power down the ps3 - i dont mind doing this tho.

You might think it dosnt "look good" by having a big black box sitting next to the ps3, u can find enclosures with material similar to the ps3 if u want - i didnt do this for the looks, so i dont mind lol

The good points however are that it helps with heating considerably, as there is no hdd in the ps3 to get hot. If your having heat issues with your ps3 this could be one option to keep it a bit cool.

The 3.5" hdds spin at 7200rpm meaning files are accessed faster, only slightly, but you can notice the differnce.

Well thats all the points i can think of right now, if you know more post away :smileyhappy:

Heres another guide but not as straight forward as getting the Xtender.

My ps3 has been working perfectly with this mod, havnt had any problems. Feel free to do this if you want that extra hdd space, any questions just post here.

Would be good if this can be stickied with the other hdd thread as well :smileyhappy:

cheers

Re: The Official PS3 HDD MOD Thread

Is PS3 compatible with 10000rpm internal drives? Could see noticeably improved load times if that's the case.

Re: The Official PS3 HDD MOD Thread

Once I get a new PS3 I'll do this for sure.... cheers for this Night Raver.

Btw, I thought the PS3 HDD was 5400 rpm? Could be wrong though...

Re: The Official PS3 HDD MOD Thread

the standard HDD in the PS3 is 5400rpm but the 7200rpm drives do provide some small but noticeable performance increase so hopefully a 10,000rpm drive will provide a more worthwhile increase in performance

Re: The Official PS3 HDD MOD Thread

From the looks of the circuit board on the extender couldnt

you just use a basic SATA cable?

Then no need for the extender, right? Of course with it, it

would make the side of the PS3 cleaner/neat looking.

And isnt it possible to get a connector for the power too?

Although, I assume that the PS3 wouldnt output enough

power to support a 3.5" HDD.

BUMP

Anyone tried plugging a 3.5 SATA straight into the back

of the PS3without the extender?

yes u could although the Xtender just makes it a lot easier to access the sata port instead of having to squeese the cable inside the opening plus it comes with a cover which helps from dust etc from getting in

to your post above: yes you could get a power cable as well to power the hdd but as i said earlier the 3.5" hdd is too big for the ps3, u really do need an external power source otherwise the hdd will draw a lot of power out of the ps3 resulting in the ps3 constantly freezing

Re: The Official PS3 HDD MOD Thread

I have a 1 TB hdd in a 3.5 enclosure. I can't get the sata cable plugged in inside of the PS3. Does the extender fix that?
