Thanks for the info but internet browsing on PS3 is slower than waiting for a London Bus...

It takes 40+ seconds just to load the first screen when entering the browser and all my settings are fine...

IF your settings were fine You would have a faster page as your Home screen which would then only take 10 secs to load say... www.google.co.uk ( which works fine by the way as im only on 720p on my PS3)

Still faster than Firefox takes to start on this laptop which is "12 secs" as Firefox runs the Plugin check script  way to offen.

Back to topic :

Yahoo mail still requires Classic mail mode which is now back to working state after a bit of coding errors .

GMail can be set up to divert yahoo mail if you want the more modern Layout..

So its not because im on 720p component its because im not currently running 1080p O well Have to pour coca cola down the back of the TV soon then... ( can't justify new TV just for web browser. lol)

Your poor TV! It's probably living in fear now that any day... And after all the loyal service it's given you :smileywink:

Actually, given that there's plenty of room for the PS3's text entry dialog at 720p on Google (if you remove the grey pencil caption line and the editing area, i.e. as it appears on 1080p), I can't see why Sony chose to do this at 720p.

In fact, a better solution all round would be to adopt the 1080p's solution for all resolutions and simply scroll the window so the current line of text being edited can be seen at the same time as the text entry dialog. I simulated this at 1080p, by increasing a text area's rows to 100 and the browser currently scrolls the window so you can see the line you're editing (cursor location), i.e. this might be an entirely feasible change. A "hybrid" solution might also be worth considering, where you keep the existing setup for text boxes (single line), as forcing the window to scroll on Google (at 480p) might look a tad odd (even though this would mean you would lose features like automatic spell check).

Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

after coping text, the ps3's copy/search/cancel bubble keeps popping up everywhere,

upon clicking a link. i have to press circle to say 'no thanks', then carry on as usual.

slightly annoying when it happens 5 times on 5 consecutive links

I'd be interrested to know why some PS3 owners don't like the browser user interface (UI) as it seems perfectly in keeping with the PS3.

Here's a summary of the interface, using actual PS3 controller, which hasn't changed in the new browser:

  • Change page address by pressing Start  and entering new address (hold down Square and L1 to delete existing address).
  • To go "Back" to the previous page, press L1 (to go "Forward", press R1). To display full "History", press Triangle and select History from the menu.
  • Bookmark page by pressing Select and pressing X. To load a bookmarked page, press Select and select bookmark from list.
  • Move the cursor using left stick (nicely calibrated - doesn't move too fast or too slow).
  • Scroll page using right stick (scroll speed is excellent).
  • To zoom whole page (e.g. for readability), move cursor to blank area of page and press right stick (R3) (in some cases, you may need to hold down L2 to un-zoom page). To cancel zoom press R3 again.
  • To zoom into a picture or video etc, position cursor on item and press right stick (R3) and adjust zoom with R2 / L2.
  • Open link in new window by simply holding down X button on a link (great feature - unlike NetFront, this now works every time). To move between windows, press L2 / R2 in "un-zoomed" state.
  • Display all open windows (max 6), by pressing left stick (L3). From here you can select a window (use left stick and press X). You can also "Open New Window" (home page or bookmark), "Close Window" and "Close All Other Windows", by pressing Triangle and selecting option from menu.

You can also use the PS3 remote with the browser (I use this 90% of the time), where instead of moving the cursor and scrolling the page with the left and right sticks, you use the cursor keys to move the cursor to a link, button etc, which will scroll the page where the element is off-screen. Even with the browser issues I've mentioned previously, which I hope Sony have high on their list of things to fix, this is still a great way to use the browser. It's not so good with Flash video players as you can't normally select full screen (PS3YouTube is an exception ) or jump ahead in a video. To select full screen, how about long pressing X or Enter on the video?

So, once you get the hang of the UI, which seems reasonably intuitive and doesn't clutter up the screen, I can't see you'd have any issues (browser bugs asside). If you still don't like it, please give details.

How does it compare to Chrome in Google TV? Pages are displayed similar to the zoomed page state mentioned above (you can't zoom into a specific picture etc and zooming the page further is rather slow, unlike PS3). You move the cursor using the touchpad and can scroll the page using a double fingure gesture, both of which I found significantly less accurate than the PS3's sticks (e.g. I kept over scrolling). Alternatively, you can page up or down or move a line up or down by pressing the respective keys. To open a link in a new window you have to hold down Shift while clicking the link and you switch windows by pressing the menu button and selecting the Windows menu option. Incognito mode? Rubbish - very unreliable (lots of browser crashes and dropped windows). Overall? For basic browsing it's fine (your non-tech savvy grandma would love it :smileywink:), but compared to the PS3's slick interface, it's boring (poor media support too).

Google TV  Vs PS3 browser.

You missed some thing very important out.

Keyboard and mouse support on PS3...

Go from playing UT3 and CS with your K&M and continue using the K&M on the browser...

Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

On the whole the UI is very good but there are a couple of tweaks I would do if given the chance.

When opening a new window rather than going through the L3 or menu ways it would be nice if you could also do it from your bookmarks page using the same method you would for opening a link in a new window, just hold down the X button. It'd be so much simpler and I've lost count of the times I've had to backtrack to the menu to do this.

Always found using the Start button awkward for opening a URL or closing a text input menu, would it not be better to change the Zoom open/close control to a "hold both L2+R2" and then allow the R3 button to take the place of the Start button. No more craning my thumb over the thumbstick to get to a button thats half the size of the rest.

And finally, not really a UI problem but why is it that the zoom controls aren't available on ALL USB keyboards. I'm currently awaiting delivery on one of the new official Sony ones that do have this feature enabled but I'm paying £40 for the privalige. Be nice if I could have got a standard keyboard that mapped ALL the buttons on a controller.

Anyway, I know these are probably just my own personal quirks and none of it spoils the browser in any major way. And as much as the browser has its critics I've found it to be much much better than the naysayyers would have people believe, on certain sites it even leaves my PC in its wake. A PC thats gone from 3hrs use a day to roughly 20 minutes a week since my PS3 has been online. .....Can't wait for a keyboard though, this textbox is killing me.

Oh, and nice thread Tribble, been following your writings on the browser for some time. Good stuff.

See if you can re-create this issue from scratch (on first loading the browser), and if so, please list the exact steps you took, as half the battle in fixing bugs is being able to repeat them. I tried to re-create this and had no luck.

What was the message of the prompt you were getting this for (not the "Do you want to run plugin" message)?

An issue I've had a couple times is where you display the text entry dialog and it won't go away, no matter what you try (Start, Circle buttons etc) and your only option is to turn off the system... Haven't seen any pattern to this.

On the BBC news web site, usually at least once per visit, when I open an article in a new window (hold down X), I get a blank window for at least a minute and then the page loads. I can return to the original window (L2) and the cursor still moves, so this might be another issue or less likely an issue with the BBC web site itself (never had this in NetFront, but in NetFront, sometimes long pressing link opened the link in the current window - really annoying...).

Are you saying the PS3 browser's keyboard and mouse support is quite good (any difference from NetFront)? Or, that's a nice feature to have (you don't have that setup yourself)?

I also missed out that Google TV does support Flash 10, but not the very latest version and because Chrome is a slightly old version (v11), it has some issues - even more unreliable than PS3 browser in some cases (and just like PS3, you can't update it...)!
