When opening a new window rather than going through the L3 or menu ways it would be nice if you could also do it from your bookmarks page using the same method you would for opening a link in a new window, just hold down the X button. It'd be so much simpler and I've lost count of the times I've had to backtrack to the menu to do this.

That would indeed be simpler and might be feasible, although long pressing is not used elsewhere in the PS3's system menus (as far as I know), so adding this could be tricky. Having said that, once you've done it once, it sort of becomes second nature (L3, Triangle, cursor right and pick bookmark).

I didn't quite follow you when you said "I've had to backtrack to the menu to do this".

Always found using the Start button awkward for opening a URL or closing a text input menu, would it not be better to change the Zoom open/close control to a "hold both L2+R2" and then allow the R3 button to take the place of the Start button. No more craning my thumb over the thumbstick to get to a button thats half the size of the rest.

The Start button is much easier to access on the PS3 remote :smileywink: Hmm, sounds a bit radical and I bet that although the Start button takes a little bit of finding, you could still do so in the dark and after a few beers!

Anyway, I know these are probably just my own personal quirks and none of it spoils the browser in any major way. And as much as the browser has its critics I've found it to be much much better than the naysayyers would have people believe, on certain sites it even leaves my PC in its wake. A PC thats gone from 3hrs use a day to roughly 20 minutes a week since my PS3 has been online. .....Can't wait for a keyboard though, this textbox is killing me.

Exactly, but I imagine it largely depends on your setup. If you have a laptop that you use in the living room, with a big screen TV right in front of you, why on Earth would you use it to watch videos on YouTube etc when you can fire up your PS3 in seconds and enjoy them on the "big screen", with quality sound.

Agreed about the keyboard - writing anything of length using the on-screen keyboard is only good for killing an awful lot of time. I quite like it for small amounts of text, such as a search, entering web site addresses and the occasional comment on a YouTube video.

P.S. Updated Forum Tip. Instead of copying the "Rch Text" to the clipboard (for safety, before posting etc), wherever possible, copy the HTML instead, because if you paste the rich text back to the forum,  you may well find the formatting is somewhat messed up (I just had this on this forum where my session had expired).

I tried to re-create this and had no luck.i just started browser, clicked this forum from bookmarks, clicked p5 of this thread & copied this: On the BBC news.i then clicked 'message listing' at the bottom of the page & got the bubble while it was loading.
ps, no prompt message. was referring to the copy/search/cancel bubble.

Well I'll be jiggered - that's a good one. If you highlight some text on a page and click any of the options shown in the popup menu (including Cancel), the next link you click on (including page # anchors) will re-display the "Copy", "Search" and "Cancel" clipboard menu, requiring you to press Circle to close menu!

P.S. an annoying thing on this forum is the Spell Check routine checks quotes - ideally it should only spell check new text.

Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

The reference to "having to backtrack to the menu" has more to do with my memory than the UI.

I'll go to my bookmarks to open a page and then realise I want it to open in a new window and have to back out. A sequence that more often than not requires me to come out of Zoom first as well. So it ends up being- Select, R3, L3, Triangle, cursor right and pick bookmark. And then R3 to get back into Zoom.

You can see why I think pressing and holding X would be a far more elegant way to do it.

And I've partly got around my aversion to the Start button by using the "Enter" key in the textbox.

Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

hi tribble6,

your knowledge & advice has proved to be very helpful to me. thankyou!

thank's also to graphitegb & mont348.

have you any thoughts on a previous post of mine- re: skyuser, page 4, post 37?

although the percentage of people using a ps3 browser must be tiny, the percentage that have sky as an isp must be relatively high.

the official sky site is obviously the 1st point of call for most folks in this situation, however anyone that has an even slightly technical issue googles it & ends up at skyuser anyway, particularly if they need immediate advice. (as opposed to a generic response 3 days later:smileyhappy:

it's for these reasons that i see the site as being important enough to include this thread.

oh, nearly forgot- scrollbars in text entry boxes don't work properly, especially if you're editing something that's long enough to need to use them.

Whats Screen size did you run the speed test on.

Try changing the resolution and see if it fixes the speed test.

If it sticks only on 1080p but runs on 720p/576p its going to be a render engine problem with the amount on screen.

SD resolution use of the browser can report  the screen size change, this can trigger a layout change from the site but his is not happening.  SD is only 1050-720 pixels wide the sites auto width layout adjust when the window size is changed.

This also happens IF you reduce the window size on PC.

snapshot31.png

Notice the desktop is still full frame

But the window is reduced, auto size code has reduced the lay out to fit but its now so small its a mess.

This is were FIXED size pages (this forum) Vs adjustable page size (skys forum), Flaws start showing up.

You should be able to increase the resolution of SD to +2 allowing more content on screen.

This is another case for allowing the USER to choose 1080p browser mode display all the time, scaled to 720p or SD then allow Zoom and pan if the user wants to read text but instead the browser alters the browser display for SD.

Hi gymno74,

Despite my best efforts I couldn't find the post you were referring to (see tip below). Is the post regarding Sky email not working in the browser? If so and there's a workaround involving turning off JavaScript, please provide details for other Sky users.

Although I see PS3 browser users can't use this forum's "Insert/edit link" feature, you can use the PS3's handy clipboard to post the address of a forum page etc (to save page address, press Triangle and select "Copy Address of This Page" from the File menu). On this forum, you can even grab the address of a specific post by positioning the cursor on the message link (a number), on the left hand side of post (below "Report Inappropriate Content" link) and copy the address of the link (press Triangle and select "Copy Address of This Link" from the File menu).

Once you've posted the link address to your post, to convert the address into a friendly looking link (by no means essential), do the following:

  1. Switch to HTML tab (click tab).
  2. Click text box to enter edit mode.
  3. Move the text cursor to the start of the link address (just before "http"...) and enter <a href="
  4. Optionally, to get the link to open in a new window, insert target="_blank" before href, with space either side of the attribute (affer <a and before href).
  5. Move the cursor to the end of the address and enter ">Link text</a> (replace "Link Text" with something appropriate, such as the thread title), e.g.

     <a target="_blank" href="http://www.sony.com">Sony</a>

  6. Press Start to accept changes.

NOTE: At resolutions below 1080p/i (720p etc), you may want to convert the link addresses once you've finished entering your post as you have to use the HTML tab to make any subsequent changes as editing using the Rich Text tab will drop the links (you end up with only link text).

When do you see the scroll bars as are you not using a screen resolution of 576i, where you edit via the text entry dialog (instead of on the actual page as at 1080p / 1080i)?

I tried clicking the vertical scroll bar on a text area and it appeared to work o.k (tried at 1080p and 720p).

Oh right, thanks.

What was that you were saying regarding Google TV (clearly, I didn't get your point)?
