Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

Have you tried contacting Sony directly regarding your offer to help improve the browser? I would've thought that such a generous offer would at least warrant a reply from them. I called Sony a while back about various issues including the browser and received a call back from a senior representative. Considering your sterling work with PS3Youtube and the Bookmarklet surely someone must be aware of your abilities and willingness to help. I think they should be paying you as a consultant.

Let's role the dice :smileyhappy:...

Here's my email to PlayStation Support (U.S.):

As a Software Engineer, with around twenty years experience, I would like to volunteer my services (for free), for a concerted effort to address the various issues in the PS3 Internet Browser (crashes, long pauses, disappearing cookies etc, etc) and improve the overall experience.

I have been hooked on the PlayStation brand since the PS1 and when Microsoft introduces Internet Explorer to the X-Box 360 in the fall, I hope you would agree that, at the very least, it would be great if the PS3 browser had a fighting chance in a head to head competition. As it stands (assuming Microsoft is able to incorporate a highly stable version of IE9), any bout would sadly result in a first round knockout of the PS3 browser.

Even though my background is in the PC and Web fields, including development of multi-threaded Windows applications and more recently the PS3 Bookmarklet (have developed in 8086 assembler, C, C++, C# (inc. .Net), MS SQL and JavaScript), I believe I have the experience and tenacity (spent 1000+ hrs on bookmarklet for $0.00!) that would allow me, given time, to hopefully make a real difference on the browser front.

I also host and regularly contribute to an in-depth thread on the PS3's new WebKit based browser (introduced with Firmware 4.10, back in February):

You would be better of using A Company name in your communications.

Side topic.

Confirmed that the standalone applications like "Playmemories" are still using the OLD browser Preset launcher in there coding.

The New browser remains only usable by XMB direct launch and not from the applications.

Let's hope that Sony have the foresight to take your proposal seriously Tribble, and not look a gift horse in the mouth. :smileyhappy:

Clicking external YouTube video link, in PS3 browser, re-directs to invalid page

[ Edited ]

Regarding the recent YouTube issue, where clicking an external YouTube video link takes you to an invalid page (on YouTube XL), mont348 has found a solution.

You need to delete cookies and then when you end up on YouTube XL, click the View Standard Version link.

Deleting cookies / cache has never done much for me in the past (in the PS3 browser), but in this case, it does indeed appear to work :smileyhappy:.

P.S. No final word on my offer to help with the browser (I need to dust off and update my CV...).

Sorry, I didn't report the exact steps I took (I should know better...).

To restore service, you need to delete cookies and then visit the YouTube home page, which re-directs you to a valid XL page and finally click the "View Standard Version" link.

Re: Clicking external YouTube video link, in PS3 browser, re-directs to invalid page

I've been having a spot of bother with ps3youtube in the last couple of days. Videos have stopped working for me. I tried clicking the link at the bottom of the page to delete the cookie to no avail. I then tried deleting all of my cookies from the tools menu but that didn't work either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should now be getting a message on PS3youtube.com about the HQ content feed being unavailable or blocked.

Youtube change the site code again.

Re: Clicking external YouTube video link, in PS3 browser, re-directs to invalid page

I got ps3youtube working by bookmarking normal youtube here:

http://www.youtube.com/index?persist_app=1&app=desktop

Then, on PS3youtube & with cookies set to 'allow', follow the normal procedure for enabling HQ, but instead of clicking the 'go to youtube' link, go to the bookmark instead.
