Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

[ Edited ]

My point was that with Google TV, people will be stuck with a remote,  With PS3 your not. you can use multi controll options from BD remote, DS3 and MY set up. Full Keyboard and Mouse.

With the PS3 you will use text entry more and people will actualy look up that they can get these addons.

People won't do that with Google TV. unless you force it on them. making apps Worse on Google TV.

Mouse use should not be dumped for track pads, cursor keys and Touch screen.

graphitegb you're spot on.

the messed up screen formatting at http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/ happens on all screen resolutions apart from 1080i & presumably 1080p (my lounge lcd is only 1366x768).

i never thought to change the browser resolution, but yes setting it to +2 has it looking perfect.

i agree it's something the ps3 should take care of.

speedtest still throws a wobbly though, but not a problem as most online testers don't work properly anyway.

i only mentioned it as it used to be the best one to use (that i'd found) prior to update 4.10.

Yeah, with the PS3 you've always had a great choice of accessories. Have you noticed any differences in keyboard usage (LogiTech MediaBoard?) in the new browser, e.g. in NetFront, were you able to move the cursor around a text box after closing the text entry dialog, but now this isn't possible?

For Google TV, instead of shipping a full sized keyboard with the Logitech Revue (I have one) or a mini-sized keyboard combo with Sony's Internet TV's and Blu-ray player, they should have instead gone with a standard shaped remote (ideal for selecting movies etc), which doubled up as a Qwerty keyboard when used in landscape mode. They could have achieved this in several ways: double sided remote, slide out keyboard or even a "hi-tech" illuminated keyboard that changed it's buttons depending on its orientation. Having a full sized keyboard on the couch is awkward and Sony's remote looks like something to control an Apollo space mission (again, somewhat awkward to use and not ideal for simply selecting a movie to watch).

Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

Usage Guide

  • Concerned about catching a virus using the browser? Rest assured, this has never been possible on the PS3 because the browser does not allow you to run or install applications and the media files that it does support, such as videos and pictures, cannot contain any sort of code, virus or otherwise. If you download an unsupported file, such as an ".EXE" (for use on a PC), you should of course virus check this on your computer.

So if you cannot catch a virus, what is Trend Micro Web Security? This just blocks web sites that are known to be fraudulent, such as a fake bank web site, which trick you into entering your online id / password etc. If you have no choice but to access your online bank site etc using your PS3, this software is probably overkill; you should just access the bank site directly (via a bookmark) and not via a link in an email etc and if you are at all unsure, double check the web page address.

  • Having trouble with slow video buffering (on PS3YouTube etc), resulting in the video stopping and starting? Try pausing the video and waiting until a sufficient amount of the video has buffered. If you are using the PS3 remote on PS3YouTube you can't pause the video directly (clicking video toggles full screen mode), so instead, switch to a different window (if necessary, open a new window) as this also pauses the video, which keeps buffering.

  • If you've shelled out the $5 for "No adds" on PS3YouTube, which now comes with the 720p playback option (the default), you may well find 720p sometimes buffers too slowly (if you use the above tip, you'll be waiting forever). If so, click the 480p link at the top of the page, to switch back to DVD resolution, which I find perfectly acceptable on my 42" Samsung 1080p TV.

Browser Issues

  • When you press cursor down (using PS3 remote etc) from the last visible link on a page, instead of jumping to the next link below the current link and scrolling the page, it jumps to any visible link on the right hand side of the page. This is the main reason using the PS3 remote on the US PS3 forum has become so horrible (keeps jumping to user profile links (on right hand side), which display popup user profiles...).

  • As shown by the following photo (also had this with the recent BBC Earth / Nikon ad), there's a new display issue with some Flash adverts, which displays the advert in the wrong position and multiple times. Also, the advert controls cannot be clicked, such as the video controls shown in the picture (the video did actually play):

When do you see the scroll bars as are you not using a screen resolution of 576i, where you edit via the text entry dialog (instead of on the actual page as at 1080p / 1080i)?
I tried clicking the vertical scroll bar on a text area and it appeared to work o.k (tried at 1080p and 720p).
sorry, should explain i simultaneously connect to a 1366x768 lcd with hdmi @ 1080i (lounge) & a 16:9 crt with rgb scart @ 576i (adjacent bedroom).
when editing a post or e-mail, each click of the up or down button on a scrollbar results in the virtual keyboard appearing. this means i'm often in for a lengthy sequence of o,x,o,x etc button bashing in order to reach the bottom of the text.
far worse is in store when i finally get there though. i'll hover the cursor where i want to add text (usually right at the end), press start & wham! it's all scrolled back to the top & i have to start o,x,o,x  all over again. grrrr. doesn't happen every time but i'm yet to see exactly what i'm doing when it doesn't.
ps quick tip for the copy/paste/search bubble issue: after pressing x to confirm what to copy & it's gone to the clipboard, just press x again to 'clear' copy mode. works for me.

Confirmed.

In this forum, clicking anywhere on the scroll bar for the "Rich Text" textarea scrolls the control and erroneously displays the text entry dialog - that's messed up! It doesn't do this for regular (text only) textarea's, such as for the HTML tab, instead the mouse cursor moves to the center of the control, which also isn't good.

What you can do to avoid this is click anywhere on the textarea and use the text entry dialogs's down arrow button (towards bottom left of dialog) to get to the bottom of the text.

Press Start - did you mean X? Yeah, in "Rich Text" mode the positioning is unreliable when the control is scrolled, o.k. for regular textarea.

Nice tip

Re: The PlayStation 3 Internet Browser Thread

How about making this thread a sticky as it has presently been excluded from the Google search results (Larry probably didn't like my critique of Google TV). If it's a sticking point, I would not mind if my comments on Google TV were deleted as I'm only really interested in advancing the PS3 browser.

Browser Issues

  • When cursoring to some links (with PS3 remote etc), such as the thread links on this site, something goes wrong as the MouseOver event isn't generated (causing thread popup on this site to not appear), even though document.activeElement is set to the link, also cursor doesn't change to a hand.

  • The cursor down (also applies cursoring up) issue I mentioned previously (should jump to link below current link, regardless of whether it's on screen or not), can actually make it impossible to scroll page because cursor keeps jumping right and left, instead of just down, as currently on YouTube subscriptions (new videos) page (Grid view).

Browser Tips

  • When using phone style layout for on-screen keyboard (recommended), you can quickly enter a digit by cursoring to the button with the required digit and pressing L2 (instead of first clicking button and then pressing L2). As suggested previously, if you need to enter several consecutive digits, press Select twice to switch to the digit keypad (which could do with a dot key).

i'd quite like an Abc key on there aswell, like mobiles do for sms

Text fields that don't work when I'm using my PS3 browser virtual keyboard.

Some text fields won't allow me to type in them from my PS3's browser's virtual-keyboard. No error message/advisory message is generated, instead the cursor changes into a writing tool icon, then just blinks at me! This is exactly what happens when I try to sign on to my twitter account. I have to go round the main page by pressing the SIGN IN button underneath & sign in the FOGOTTON YOUR USERNAME/PASSWORD page. The trouble is, many fields I might need to type in to, don't have a backup text-entry field system. I was redirected from my thread to your thread. It still doesn't work WITH or WITHOUT Javascript turned on! What would really be helpful, is if I could actually have a conversation with someone about it. I have got nowhere fast with the PS3 phone helpdesk on this problem; infact Sony want me to send my PS3 back to them! You're never allowed to speak to anyone who has technical knowlege - they're always hidden away like Repunzal in her tower! And that's not just Sony - that's all computer firms I find!
