Okay I've done it and so far so good.

It's a 7200RPM HDD, has anyone had any trouble with those.

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

mine has no problem at all. I think the only problem you would have is if it'd be an older model which would generate a huge amount of heat.

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

This has probably been answered somewhere else in this thread, but it's 56 pages long and I can't be bothered going through the whole thing.

Now if my PS3 was to short out again (has that happened to anyone more than once?) and I sent it to Sony for repair, removing my new HDD and inserting the original, would everything on the new HDD still remain.

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

Yes the data will still remain and you could put it back into the same PS3 and all would be good, but.........

The problem is when you send a PS3 in for repair, the console ID gets changed, so when you put the HDD back in that console, it will automaticly format the drive, so of course all data will be lost.

Is it completely dead ??
Can you at least copy your gamesaves to an external device ??

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

I've gotten into the habit of backing up my save files.  Shame I'd lose everything on the HDD if the PS3 shorted out again.

Has that happened to anyone more than once.

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

Guys, I just upgraded my Original 60GB PS3 tonight!!

It's lasted this long, but these game upgrades are getting beyond the joke.

If I wanted to upgrade a game or download a Beta version of a game i was running out of space.

So i upgraded to a 500GB Hard Drive tonight, was pretty simple, but i still dont know if everything's perfect. Haven't had a chance to actually test things out tonight 100%.

Wish me luck ladies & gents, but, i just wanna say thanks for all these helpful notes.

I didn't have to install the latest system software upate either.

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

Thanks for the above. My biggest problem was finding the height of the HDD, which I am still yet to find. I did the technical procedure and measured the internal height of the cage to accept a 9.8mm drive. I saw some for sale that were 12.5mm. So check the height of the HDD.

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

I upgraded my 40gb to a 350gb hardrive over a year ago, a couple of months ago I got the YLOD, now I've gotta send my console to Sony, once I put the 40gb back in, they will format it there, just wondering what will happen when i put my 350gb back into the console after the 40gb has been formatted? Will it format my 350gb?

Re: The Unofficial PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Thread

If they replace the motherboard, then the answer is "yes". The ID written to the harddrive has to match the ID hardcoded on the motherboard (each one is unique). If it doesn't match, the harddrive is formatted.
