Thriller Games

Hey Gang,

I was just reading about a new game about the US Military that's due for release soon.

It got me thinking - would it be possible / plausible and accepted to have a game that was a bit like a Matthew Reilly thriller with MacGyver-esque challenges.

One thing to consider - *can* people even play games anymore where there are no or limited save points, and limited lives?

We're all too accustomed to restarting from the last checkpoint when our characters die.

If there were to be a game like the one I'm imaginging, it might be a little like Nathan Drake's adventures and mishaps.

In Mr Reilly's novels, there are a lot of cliff-hanger moments, both literal and figurative - you're often left wondering what has happened to a character that's fallen off a cliff - whilst you're reading through a different storyline for two or three chapters.

In one example the cliff hanger was at the end of a book - and the resolution was a year away!

So, the game might give you specific objects found in whatever environment you're in, and it's up to you to think of ways to use them, or combine them - similar to Scarecrow and MacGyver.

There are a lot of perilous moments, and you're always on the cusp of death. If you're falling down a cliff, you might have 10 chances (whilst time is still passing, and the ground is getting ever closer) to use your MagHook to save yourself. If that fails, you can try grasping at the cliff face, or create a parachute.

If you don't survive, you'd have to restart the whole game as that character, or perhaps you could continue on as a survivor, and deal with the consequences as they arise.

Do you think gamers could still play a game like this? Or are we too dependent on save games?

Re: Thriller Games

Id love this game, although it would be VERY Frustrating. It would make good fun for drunken parties. Line up and get drunk and see who gets the furthest haha :smileyhappy:

Re: Thriller Games

If you played Heavy Rain first time through what I consider the 'proper' way, then you had to live with your consequences...

So no level reloading, quit and exiting... and you stuck with your decisions no matter what...

Even though I have since unlocked the Plat and all 24 or so different character endings (along with many combinations of them all)... this is MY version of the game

Ethan

Spoiler
Hanged himself in his prison cell because Sean drowned

Madison

Spoiler
Madison lived, but didn't get the password to make it to the warehouse

Scott

Spoiler
Got away

Jayden

Spoiler
Died in the car crusher

So bad conclusion to Heavy Rain all around for me... but like a movie where the good guys don't win.. it still works...
