Transfer Files option

Ok, i made a post the other day about my launch 60 getting ylod, long story short myself and a friend went surgical on her and its in working order again. Woop!!

Anywho as we all know, no one really knows how long that will last so ill prob get a new slim, so ill use the transfer files option now available.

So im wondering is that the same as a back up system(which doesnt back up some stuff)

or will it just move and copy absolutely everything over to the new PS3?

Re: Transfer Files option

Ok i did the file transfer on Thursday and I can confirm the following. It makes a copy of all your PSN games, it moves your copy protceted save files. It copys themes etc, it only took about 24 mins to do and was pretty seemless. Great feature that I cant reccomend enough

So am I right in thinking you now have two PS3s sync-ed, both 100% usable and all the content working on both?

Re: Transfer Files option

I traded in the original but after the trasnfer I noticed it still had all the PSN games onit, to do the trasnfer you have to deactivate your original PS3 first then transfer. So sadly i cant confirm if they still worked on the original

Re: Transfer Files option

can anyone confirm if the transfer works with singstar songs or not?

Not that I have any, but knowing the issues with them and trying to re-download them to a new PS3, would be nice to know :smileyhappy:

Re: Transfer Files option

I remember someone saying they had to ring Sony to get the songs moved to the new system

Here you go

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/SystemUpdates/PS3/PS3_315_update.html#data_transfer

Limitations of the data transfer utility (as of December 10, 2009)

Some types of data cannot be transferred using the data transfer utility, and some types of data can be transferred but not played on the destination PS3™ system. For the latest information visit the Knowledge Center for the PlayStation®3 system.

The following types of data are confirmed as not transferable:

  • Video content that has been downloaded as a rental from PlayStation®Store (file type: MNV)
  • Tracks (including "songpacks") and settings information for the SingStar® software that have been saved on the PS3™ system’s hard disk
  • Video files that are compatible with the DivX® VOD (Video On Demand) service
  • The following PlayStation®2 format software titles, if they are installed on the PS3™ system's hard disk:
    • [FINAL FANTASY XI] and [Expansion Discs]
    • [SOCOM II: U.S. NAVY SEALs] and [Related discs included with OPM* Issue 87, OPM* Issue 88, OPM* Issue 89, OPM* Issue 90]
    • SOCOM 3: U.S. NAVY SEALs
    • SOCOM: U.S. NAVY SEALs Combined Assault

    * Official PlayStation Magazine

For the following data types, you must perform some additional steps after completing the data transfer to use the data:

  • Application data for Life with PlayStation®
    • Download and install the Life with PlayStation® application on the destination PS3™ system. You can continue to accumulate contribution points for the PlayStation®Network ranking of the Folding@home™ channel.
  • GripShift®
    • When you start the game for the first time after the data transfer operation, an error message will be displayed and you will not be able to play the game. To play the game, download and install the game again.
  • Saved data for Ghostbusters™: The Video Game
    • The saved game will not be recognized when you start the game for the first time after the data transfer operation. To use the saved data, quit the game, and then start the game again.
