Updating firmware . will I lose PS2 support?

[ Edited ]

I apologize in advance if this has been asked in a previous thread, but I've been searching online all day for an answer to no avail.

I have a launch PAL 60GB "fat" PS3, which as you know plays PS2 discs and I haven't updated the firmware in quite a while.

I read that with the newest firmwares all PS3's can play PS2 classics bought on the PS Store (awesome!), however I'm worried; will updating remove my ability to play PS2 games from disc?

  • Someone on reddit told me the following:
"It depends, actually. There were two models that played PS2 games: one through software emulation, and another through hardware emulation (it literally had the PS2's Emotion Engine processor in it). If you have the former, then you will lose that functionality with a system update. If you have the latter (which I believe is more common) then you should be fine."

  • And according to Wikipedia the 60GB PAL model uses "Partially software-based PS2 emulation".

Might be a silly question but I just want to be sure, I love SONY but lost linux support (with a partition for it still on the HDD) due to lack of research on my part and you know... "fool me once" and whatever. Thank you very much in advance.

Don't worry. You can update without losing PS2 disc support.

my friend has the 60GB launch model and he's always up to date with the firmware, including the latest, and hasn't lost the ability to play his PS2 titles :smileyhappy:

The PS2 support is part firmware/ part hardware on the 60GB launch machines. Updating won't lose anything.

Can other Ps3s now play PS2 discs because of the ps2 classics ?

Nope, just the launch 60GB's and a tiny percentage of US special edition 80GB's. Full software emulation for disc games hasn't, and probably never will, be added.
