Upgrading my Hard Drive.

Hey I was thinking of upgrading my Hard Drive so I can hold more stuff on it and I have a few questions?

1. How much will it cost?
2. How easy is it to do?
3. How likely is it to muck up my PS3 whilst doing it?

Re: Upgrading my Hard Drive.

1. Depends on the size (avg £50-70 320GB)

2. Very

3. Unlikely. Make sure you backup saves.

Re: Upgrading my Hard Drive.

Thanks, how about external ones?

I know you use a USB but does it work in the same way?

As long as it's formatted in FAT32, it's plug and play. They tend to be more expensive though. Have a shop about.

Using external drives is as simple as it gets. All you need to do is format the drive to FAT32 file system, and you're good to go. The main problem is that it's not a substitute for a large internal drive as you cannot use it for many things - like game installs for example, but they are a good alternative for storing music, or transferring videos downloaded from the store onto if you're running out of space on your internal drive.

Re: Upgrading my Hard Drive.

So if I used an external would it upgrade my 60 GB to say 380 GB, but I'd only be able to store music, movies and pictures on there?

Basically yes - it would just give you additional storage, and would appear in your XMB on the Video, Music, Pictures etc. menus as an external device that you can copy things to/from, or stream content from. One handy thing with external drives is that you can also use it as an overflow for your PC/Mac/Laptop for backing up stuff, which obviously you can't do an internal drive in the PS3.

Re: Upgrading my Hard Drive.

Hmm internal seems more attractive due to me wanting to use game saves ect for it.

Is this a good one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Scorpio-Serial-5400rpm/dp/B000VNCEPA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=el...

Re: Upgrading my Hard Drive.

Yep. That's fine. Seems to be the most popular for upgrading. I think ebuyer and dabs do it cheaper, it's always worth a shop around when buying components.
