I can see a lot of the same questions getting asked in a lot of different boards and threads... so how about we try and keep what we know all in one place.. and hopefully keep it accurate..

1. Will a System Restore from my old PS3 work on a new PS3?
The Backup Utitlity in the Settings menu will create a backup of your current system information, but it is very system specific, and may not restore all your information, including the gamesaves to the new console.
2. Can I manually transfer gamesaves across by using Triangle to copy my gamesaves to an external USB device?
Yes... Beware there are a couple of problems.
Some gamesaves are copy-protected and cannot be copied. Killzone 2 is a well known example.. and there are others.
The ability to unlock trophies on copied gamesaves is usually disabled, even if you are using the same PSNID that the save file was created under. There are apparant exceptions, such as Sega Ultimate Genesis (apparantly).
Music and Video media can be transferred between two systems without a problem though.
3. Is there any way to transfer that copyrighted Data?
Yes, there is only one way if you MUST have it on another system, eg. you bought a new PS3 Slim and are selling your old PS3 tomorrow (Funnily enough, this is what the thread is about).
If you connect an ethernet cable to the PlayStation 3, you can connect it to another PlayStation 3 and activate the Data Transfer Utility. This will transfer all of the copyrighted data (and other bits and pieces) to the new PlayStation. However, if you do this, all the information you just transferred will no longer be on the original PS3.
4. Will I lose all my trophies already earned?
No. Trophies, like MS Achievements once synced to your network account are stored as part of your PSNID information by Playstation. Trophies are not 'saved' to your harddrive, but you need to sync your profile to upload them. You will also have to synchronise the viewing of them to your new console once you get it.
5. Can I just transfer my hard-drive from my current system to my new console?
You can if you like, but the Hard-drive will reformat itself. The reason for this is that the hard-drives of Playstation 3 consoles are formatted to specific console ID's. If this ID is changed, the Hard-drive will reformat to the new ID presented. (Edited by Sanguine)
6. Can I re-download games and content purchased on the PSN?
Yes, provided you are using the same PSNID you can download purchased content to five different PlayStation 3 consoles. (Five is the maximum)
Singstar is the single exception to this rule. There are DRM issues which prevent this from being enabled. If you change to a PS3 120gb and need to have these updated, PS Support can do this on request provided you have all the correct details of your account.
7. Will I be able to upgrade the hard drive on the slim ps3?
Yes.
8. Will the slim ps3 return PS2 backwards compatibility?
No.
9. Can the PS3 slim be stored vertically?
Yes, with the optional vertical stand - this is sold separately at most major retailers.
10. Is it safe to do the "fan test" or "self clean mode" like I've seen on YouTube?
No, most certainly not. I wouldn't put any console, whether it be the new Slim 120gb or the old 60gb through that sort of test, unless you have been specifically told by a Tech Support agent. Most times the "fan test" is actually a force eject, which can hurt the console if not done properly.
And on another note - we will never ask you to hold your PS3 upside down to do anything. Especially if it is still on.
11. How can I use my PS2 Singstar games on my PS3?
It's easy enough. All you need to do is insert a PS3 copy of Singstar. Then, we want you to go online, and download the required patch. Once you have this, go to the song selection screen.
Then press select, and put in a PS2 disc when prompted. ![]()

I hope you don't mind boys and girls, I have cleaned out this thread and edited Kiwi's post so that we have a nice, clean, informative FAQ for everyone updating to the 120gb - the Slim! If you have any other questions you think should be here, please post them, and they will be answered!
Love, Sanguine

The only reason you'd upgrade would be for a new system and year's warranty.
Otherwise, the 'Other OS' has been taken out of the new system, and the insides
of the new console are less power hungry.
Apart from the aesthetic changes that is.

regarding point 4;
4. Can I just transfer my hard-drive from my current system to my new console?
I have read elsewhere that even removing a drive and trying to put it back in the same console will result in it being formatted and all data being lost.. can anyone tell me if this is true?

If you take out your hard drive, put in a new one and start up your PS3 and format the drive..
Then put the old one back in, it will ask you to reformat the drive.

ok, that makes more sense than losing everything just because you removed the drive from your console. Thanks Lythinari ![]()
