Re: Upgrading to a PS3 Slim - Questions and Answers FAQ

Just remember with an external drive that you can only use it for storing media... ie: music, videos, pictures... although you can also backup gamesaves to it.. (you can't load gamesaves directly from it though)

Yes, there is only one way if you MUST have it on another system, eg. you bought a new PS3 Slim and are selling your old PS3 tomorrow (Funnily enough, this is what the thread is about).

If you connect an ethernet cable to the PlayStation 3, you can connect it to another PlayStation 3 and activate the Data Transfer Utility. This will transfer all of the copyrighted data (and other bits and pieces) to the new PlayStation. However, if you do this, all the information you just transferred will no longer be on the original PS3.

Just thinking, if I were to run a Full Backup to an external HDD on my original console, then run the Data Transfer which will MOVE the data to the new console, there isn't anything stopping me from doing a Full Restore back on the original console is there? So ultimately I have 2 consoles containing ALL the same data which I can run simultaneously. Right?

Re: Upgrading to a PS3 Slim - Questions and Answers FAQ

If it is anything like the similar 360 system to which it seems based off, then I would say..... no.

Re: Upgrading to a PS3 Slim - Questions and Answers FAQ

i am also thinking about gettting a 120 slim and then putting my existing 500 hd into it. the way i am going to get around loosing all the data is to; first transfer all data to the 120 console, then put the original 40gb back into the original console and transfer all the data to it. then finaly put the 500gb into the slim and transfer the info onto it. seems like alot of stuffing around but its the only way i can think of tranferring all info (including copy protected stuff). also can anyone tell me will an ethernet cable be enough for a transfer of files between a fat and slim console, or will i need a crossover cable?

Re: Upgrading to a PS3 Slim - Questions and Answers FAQ

RTFM It doesn't need to be a crossover, you can use an ordinary patch lead.

Re: Upgrading to a PS3 Slim - Questions and Answers FAQ

No, most modern network interfaces can autonegotiate the connection. A crossover will still work but it isn't necessary.
