V-SYNC

Just a quick question, currently playing, Indiana Jones demo (lego), in the options is  v-sync ,  i play the game with it turned off,  frame rate issues, and screen tearing. Turn v-sync on, hey presto perfect graphics, no issues at all.  My question is why don't all games have this option, i suffer a lot of screen tearing, uncharted, heavenly sword, even Battlefield BC, most people say that it is my TV ( Toshiba 37" full hd + hdmi ). But if the picture is fine using v-sync, then surely it can't be my TV.

Re: V-SYNC

Yeah vsync is a godsend, although some people turn it off as they would prefer to see their FPS counter go really high... silly people.

Re: V-SYNC

it is probalbly taking a frame rate cut of 1-2 to have v-sync on, i guess its not on all games as some may be default on anyway, from a pc perspective vsync usaully runs terrible(needs a lot more power)

Re: V-SYNC

Well do you know what Vertical Sync does? It locks the games framerate to the refresh rate of your screen. Stops the game running faster than your screen can display, hence fewer problems.

Re: V-SYNC

I wish more games allowed us to toggle V-Sync without it games just have constant screen tearing and that ruins games for me.

It doesn't necessarily lock it to the same as the refresh rate, although it will if the game is rendering at a fps rate that is faster than the display's refresh rate. However, if the game renders slower than the refresh rate of the display then the rendered frames are effectively delayed to ensure they are not received by the display when it is mid-pass (i.e. halfway through re-drawing the image) - this will result in a lower frame rate than if v-sync were disabled, but prevent screen tearing. Hence v-sync is great for games that are rendering consistently at 60fps+, but not so great for those that regularly drop below that. That said, a game that renders between 30 and 60fps can benefit from v-sync as it can lock the frame rate down to a consistent 30fps (which in most types of games is perfectly serviceable if not stunning), and provide a smoother experience overall.
